Mexico’s Federal Police Reorganized Into 5 Regional Commands

The overhaul of the Federal Police has started, with the law enforcement agency being reorganized into five regional operations commands to fight crime more effectively in Mexico, the National Security Comission said.

The federal law enforcement agency will have northwestern, northeastern, central, western and southeastern commands, National Security Commissioner Manuel Mondragon said.

Demi Lovato released the video for her latest single, “Let It Go,” from the soundtrack to Disney’s upcoming animated feature, Frozen.

Frozen is loosely based on The Snow Queen, a fairy tale written by Hans Christian Andersen.

Costa Rica’s Main Airport to be Renovated by Spanish Firm

Spanish construction group FCC has bolstered its presence in Latin America with a new 25-million-euro ($34-million) contract to remodel the Juan Santamaria international airport, serving the Costa Rican capital.

The project, which is to be completed within a year and a half, will include construction of a hangar at the country’s main airport and other auxiliary facilities, the company said.

Police from the northwestern Mexican border city of Tijuana and army troops found a tunnel running under the U.S.-Mexican border that apparently held several tons of drugs, officials said.

Tijuana police chief Jesus Alberto Capella Ibarra and army commanders cordoned off the tunnel, which was found on Wednesday afternoon.

Actress Paz Vega said finding a good role in Spain was tough right now, but she was excited about her upcoming project with director Manuel Gomez Pereira.

“In Spain, what’s really hard is getting a film off the ground, getting the money ... because the (economic) situation is bad for everybody and for the industry,” the Spanish actress said in an interview with Efe.

Brazilian oil company OGX, part of the conglomerate controlled by magnate Eike Batista, said it filed for bankruptcy protection.

The company made the request Wednesday due to serious financial woes stemming from disappointing output at offshore wells, a move that - if approved - will enable it to continue operating without financial pressure while it negotiates with creditors, attorney Sergio Bermudes said.

Police arrested 16 suspected Gulf cartel members on murder and drug charges in Coahuila, a state in northern Mexico, prosecutors said.

A state police tactical unit captured the suspects, who had firearms, ammunition and drugs in their possession, on Tuesday, the Coahuila Attorney General’s Office said in a statement.

The Boston Red Sox, buoyed by strong pitching by John Lackey and more clutch hitting by Shane Victorino, captured their eighth World Series title with a dominant 6-1 victory here in Game 6 over the St. Louis Cardinals.

The championship was the Red Sox’s third in the last decade, but Wednesday night’s win marked the first time in 95 years that the Red Sox clinched the World Series at Fenway Park before their adoring fans.

Pemex Gas Pipeline Leak Forces Thousands to Evacuate in Mexico

A gasoline pipeline leak early Wednesday in the western Mexican state of Jalisco forced thousands of people to evacuate their homes, although it was brought under control a few hours later, authorities said.

The leak in the conduit, operated by state-owned oil monopoly Petroleos Mexicanos, began early Wednesday in a rural area outside the town of Tlajamulco as a result of an illegal fuel tap, prompting authorities to issue an alert over a possible explosion or fire.
