Feds Roundup a Dozen Gulf Cartel Members Operating in U.S.

A sealed indictment lead to the round up of 12 alleged Gulf cartel members by federal authorities.  The indictment named 52 people with only 13, including one woman, being identified.

The round up occurred in Starr County, Texas a few miles northeast from the U.S. Mexico border. Starr County has the highest percentage of Hispanic residents of any county in the U.S. according to the U.S. Census.

Six Democratic members of the House of Representatives were arrested on Tuesday in front of the Capitol in an act of civil disobedience staged in favor of comprehensive immigration reform.

Taken into custody by police were Luis Gutierrez of Illinois and Georgia’s John Lewis, a veteran of the civil rights movement, along with New York Reps. Charles Rangel and Joe Crowley, Arizona’s Raul Grijalva and Keith Ellison of Minnesota.

163,000 Federal Latino Employees Affected by Shutdown - Hear What Some Have to Say

The government shutdown that is approaching its second week has furloughed over 800,000 federal employees.  Of those employees 163,000 are Latino.  Our good friends over at News Taco took to the street to get some feedback from Latino/a employees from different governmental agencies on the shutdown. 

The consensus is get us back to work this shutdown is ‘senseless’ and bad for the country.

13 Federal Police Arrested in Mexico in Connection with Kidnapping, Murder

Thirteen of 18 people arrested in an operation targeting a criminal gang in the Mexican resort city of Acapulco are active-duty federal police, government security spokesman Eduardo Sanchez said Tuesday.

The 18 suspects, thought to be involved in seven homicides and four kidnappings, were arrested during the period Oct. 2-4 thanks to a tip from the public, the spokesman told a press conference in Mexico City.

Chicago Police Arrest Thirty-Three Alleged Gang Members in City Wide Sweep

The Chicago Police along with DEA agents announced the arrest of 33 individuals thought to be members of the Imperial Insane Vice Lords in an early morning sweep.

The Imperial Insane Vice Lords are one of Chicago’s violent, drug trafficking street gangs. Ten defendants who allegedly run operations along with street dealers were arrested.

Fashion Power Couple Isabel & Ruben Toledo Launching Line for Plus-Size Women

Fashion power couple Isabel and Ruben Toledo have announced a collaboration with plus-size retailer Lane Bryant.  The couple will design a fashion, outerwear, and accessories line for the retailer that sells to women size 14-to-28.  The plus-size retailer has over 800 stores; the Toledo collection will launch in 500 stores initially.

This is the third mass market collaboration for the Cuban, Cuban-American designing duo. The couple designs a swimwear line for Target and a shoe line for Payless.  Isabel typically acts as the designer while Ruben as the illustrator, known for his whimsical sketches.

Activists Slam Dual Voter System Being Reviewed in Arizona

Activists described Tuesday as an abuse of power the idea being studied in Arizona of establishing a dual voter system, in which those who do not use the state registration form can only vote in federal elections.

“This will possibly lead to another lawsuit against the state of Arizona. Once a person has registered to vote, he or she is eligible to vote in any election. This proposal is against the law,” said Petra Falcon, director of Promise Arizona, an organization that registers new voters and promotes Latino participation at the polls.

ACLU Denounces Florida Governor’s Bid to Revive Voter Purge Program

The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida blasted the effort by Gov. Rick Scott to revive the voter-purge program the state sought to put in place before the 2012 elections.

The Florida Department of State is conducting roundtables to promote what the Scott administration calls “Project Integrity.”

Actor Wilmer Valderrama Inks TV & Film Deal with Lionsgate & Mexico’s Televisa

Lionsgate and Mexico’s Televisa have inked another deal with a Latino Hollywood talent.  This time the film and television deal is with ‘That ‘70s Show’ star Wilmer Valderrama.

Pantelion Films and South Shore are joint ventures between Lionsgate and Televisa that produce films (Pantelion) and TV series (South Shore).  They will have a first-look at projects developed and produced by Valderrama.  It is expected the 33-year-old actor will develop films to produce and star in and TV shows that are both scripted and unscripted.

Authorities Arrest 8 for Massacre of Indians in Guatemala

Guatemalan security forces arrested eight suspected gang members on Tuesday in connection with the Sept. 8 massacre of 11 Indians in a rural community north of the capital.

Those under arrest, including two women and a minor, belong to the “Crazy Rich” cell of the fearsome Mara 18 gang, an Interior Ministry spokesman told Efe.

Yesterday the 9th Circuit Court of Arizona dealt another blow to Arizona’s harsh immigration law known as SB1070.  This court’s decision basically upheld a lower Arizona court’s decision to block the “harboring” provision of the law.

The main defender of SB1070, Governor Jan Brewer, appealed the lower court’s decision and asked the 9th Circuit to overturn it.

Juan Uribe connected on a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Los Angeles Dodgers scored a come-from-behind 4-3 win over the Atlanta Braves to advance to the National League Championship Series.

After Cuban rookie sensation Yasiel Puig had led off the inning with a double, the Dominican third baseman unsuccessfully tried to sacrifice him over to third base before smacking the homer over the left-field fence with two strikes.

There is a new iApp just launched for all the tequila lovers out there.  Purple Falcon announced the release of ‘My Favorite Tequila,’ a new food and drink app for iOS.

The app will allow users to keep track of their tequila tasting events- rate each brand, take photos, noting the location of consumption and making comments.

Diana Nyad, known for her long-distance swimming on the open sea, kicked off an event Tuesday during which she will swim 48 hours in mid-Manhattan to collect funds for the victims of last year’s Superstorm Sandy.

Nyad, 64, became on Sept. 2 the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark-cage to protect her, in a crossing that took more than 52 hours.

Chile Raises Forecast for Copper Prices, Output

Chile’s government on Tuesday raised its outlook for the price and production of copper, the Andean nation’s chief export.

The Chilean Copper Commission, or Codelco, released a report that calls for production this year in Chile of 5.7 million tons, up from the previous forecast of 5.53 million tons and 4.9 percent more than the total output for 2012.
