California Allows Undocumented to Obtain Driver’s Licenses

Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law here Thursday a measure that will allow undocumented immigrants to acquire a driver’s license in California, the 11th state to adopt such a law.

The signing ceremony was held on the steps of the Los Angeles city hall amid an almost festive atmosphere before dozens of people who chanted in Spanish “Si se pudo” (Yes, we could) and numerous politicians and representatives of social organizations, unions, law enforcement and the Catholic Church.

Police used excessive force during a march to commemorate the 45th anniversary of a massacre of student protesters in the Mexican capital, human rights organizations said Thursday.

“We have all the violations documented,” the president of the Mexican League for the Defense of Human Rights, Adrian Ramirez, told a press conference.

Antonio Banderas on Thursday dazzled the Russian media and public attending the presentation of his latest project, the animated film “Justin and the Knights of Valor.”

“We already have very good audiences in the three countries where it has been screened, the United Kingdom, Czech Republic and Spain, and I’m sure that the same thing will happen here, in Russia, which in recent years has become an incredible market for film,” said the actor at a packed press conference.

Boat Carrying 500 Immigrants Capsizes, 100 Killed Off of Italy

A boat carrying nearly 500 Eritrean and Somali migrants capsized early Thursday off the coast of the Italian Mediterranean island of Lampedusa, leaving more than 100 fatalities and 200 missing.

Accounts from survivors indicate the migrants fell into the sea when the boat, which departed from Libya’s coast, caught fire and capsized. Some of the victims were trapped under the vessel.

Three assailants died Thursday in an attack on the head of Venezuela’s Indepabis consumer protection agency, who escaped unscathed, police said.

“We know that an irregular situation arose. Three people died in the event,” deputy policy chief Douglas Rico told reporters.

The presence of Salma Hayek lit up the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s annual awards gala in Washington, where the Mexican actress and producer received the Medallion of Excellence in the Arts and Entertainment.

Hayek, who lives in Paris with husband Fran├žois-Henri Pinault and their daughter, 6-year-old Valentina, was accompanied to the event by her father and brother.

De Lucia’s performance was the main attraction of this week’s 5th Leo Brouwer Chamber Music Festival in the Cuban capital.

Puerto Rican Authorities Detain 91 Undocumented Immigrants

Puerto Rican authorities on Thursday detained 91 undocumented migrants from Haiti and the Dominican Republic as they were trying to illegally enter the U.S. commonwealth, police said.

The group was made up of 60 men, 27 women and a child, all Haitians, and three Dominicans, the Puerto Rico Police Department said in a statement.
