Brazilian chef and co-owner of one of that country’s top restaurants, Helena Rizzo, has been named Latin America’s Best Female Chef for 2013. 

Rizzo started in the kitchen at age 14 and has worked in some of the world’s finest restaurants including the award-winning Spanish restaurant El Celler de Can Roca.  Since 2006 she and her husband, Daniel Redondo, have operated the Mani restaurant in Sao Paulo.  The restaurant is often on the list of world’s best restaurants.

HISPANIC STANDOUT:  Alberto Rios Arizona’s First Poet Laureate

Hispanic standout, renowned poet and Regents Professor Alberto Rios has been selected as Arizona’s first Poet Laureate.

Rios, 61, has authored ten books of poetry, three story books and a memoir “Capirotada”.  His memoir told of his youth spent living on the Mexico-Arizona border; it won the Latino Literacy Hall of Fame Award.  He has received many other recognitions for his work including the Walt Whitman Award in Poetry.  The poet and academic started as an English professor at Arizona State University and reached the highest faculty rank in the state’s university system being named Regent in 1989.

Brazil Awaits Explanation from UK for Detaining Man Linked to Snowden

Brazil said Wednesday it is still waiting for a formal explanation from Britain of why the Brazilian partner of a journalist who has published Edward Snowden’s revelations about U.S. spying was detained for nine hours while in transit at London’s Heathrow airport.

“I continue to await a response to the formal written communication we sent requesting explanations,” Foreign Minister Antonio Patriota told the official Agencia Brasil news service.

Five skeletons were unearthed from a clandestine grave in the central Mexican municipality of Tlalmanalco, a source in the federal Attorney General’s Office said Thursday.

Two additional skeletons were then found in the clandestine grave in the central Mexican municipality of Tlalmanalco, bringing to seven the total number recovered so far, the capital district attorney said Thursday.

Personnel from his office, the Mexico state government and the federal Attorney General’s Office are searching for more remains at the site on the La Mesa ranch, Rodolfo Rios told a press conference.

According to police reports, 49-year-old John M. Dubis managed not only to get onto the massive estate while the singer was out of town, but also into the property’s pool house.

Argentine authorities are investigating the operation of several Buenos Aires morgues after the disappearance of more than 200 bodies, officials confirmed to Efe.

Court-ordered raids on several capital hospitals over the past several weeks revealed other irregularities such as unidentified human remains, body parts scattered among different refrigerated rooms and bodies in advanced stages of decomposition.

Zoe Saldana and her producer sister have reportedly inked a deal with Lionsgate’s Pantelion Films.

The U.S.-born Puerto Rican-Domincan sisters will help Lionsgate increase its presence in the Hispanic market by developing content for Hispanic audiences.

Pantelion was created in conjunction with Mexico’s Grupo Televisa in 2010 and is the first major Latino Hollywood studio.

Pantelion:

[We provide] Hispanic moviegoers with a steady source of exciting and original films, which include top-rated Latino actors, directors and writers. From broad comedies and dramas, to family movies and romantic comedies, Pantelion produces and acquires movies that speak directly to acculturated and Spanish-dominant Hispanics alike.

Zoe is currently working on the highly anticipated film “Guardians of the Galaxy,’ which is scheduled for release August 2014.

No Surprise: Former NFL’er Aaron Hernandez Indicted for Murder Today

Former New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez was indicted by a grand jury on first-degree murder and weapons charges in the killing of Odin Lloyd this morning.

The 23-year-old $40 Million NFL’er plead not guilty to killing 27-year-old Lloyd back in June.  Lloyd’s bullet-ridden body was found near Hernandez’ Attleboro, Massachusetts home.  Hernandez came under scrutiny almost immediately after the body was found on June 17.  A car was seen near the scene of the crime that was quickly tied to Hernandez.

A mysterious carcass was recently discovered on a beach in Spain and has many asking, “What is that thing?”

Though multiple guesses have been made, no one has been able to definitively identify the sea creature.

Three teenagers confessed to burning alive a vagrant who was living on the streets of the Brasilia suburb of Guara, Brazilian authorities said Wednesday.

Police spokesmen in Guara told reporters that the suspects are two males and a female, ages 18, 15 and 16.

The U.S. government through the Department of Justice has sued the state of Texas over its proposed Voter ID law, claiming it violates the 1965 Voting Rights Act and the 14th and 15th amendments of the constitution.

Texas’ voter ID law, known as SB 14, requires government-issued photo ID’s before voting but will no longer allow student IDs as suitable identification.

Chicago born artist, Anna Dominguez, has adopted tape as her medium of choice.

Calling herself the “Queen of Tape,” Dominguez has created various masterpieces featuring skylines to notable celebrities using only tape.

Her idea to switch from traditional painting and drawing stemmed from a search for something more unique.

Some pieces measure up to 8 by 10 feet and used 28 rolls of tape.

Charles Matejic, a long-time Tea Partier, is fed up.
Yes, he thinks taxes are too high in the United States and we need to slash the federal budget.
But what’s irking him at the moment is how Republicans are abandoning their principles when it comes to immigration reform.
Matejic spoke out in a town hall hosted by Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-TX) on August 10, telling the Texas congressman that spending billions more to “secure the border” with Mexico was not only fiscally silly, it was also completely impractical. The comprehensive immigration reform package that passed the Senate included a provision to hire 20,000 new border agents at many Republicans’ behest.

Julio Antonio Yanez, 29, was arrested after he allegedly entered an unlocked apartment and tried to give the sleeping woman a back rub.

U.S.-based media and entertaiment company Olympusat Inc. is working with independent film libraries to restore classic Mexican films and bring them to Spanish-speaking TV audiences in the United States.

Olympusat Holdings Inc.‘s founder and CEO, Tom Mohler, told Efe the restored films sometimes “are better than when they were screened for the first time” and hailed the “historic significance” of this effort to preserve Mexican culture.

A baby weighing 6.6 kilos (14.5 pounds) and measuring 62 centimeters (24.4 inches) long was born last week in this Mexican border metropolis.

Dilan Aram was born Aug. 14 at a hospital in Ciudad Juarez, according to municipal authorities, who along with his parents will seek to get the newborn included in the Guinness World Records.

Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso is expected to be sidelined for up to three months after fracturing a bone in his right foot during a practice Wednesday at the team’s training facilities in Valdebebas.

Alonso, who was taking part in his first training since undergoing sports hernia surgery in June, was unable to compete this summer for Spain in the Confederations Cup and also missed Real Madrid’s preseason games.

The first four lock gates for the Panama Canal expansion project arrived at the Atlantic entrance of the interoceanic waterway, where they are to be unloaded in the coming days, authorities said.

The locks, which are 58 meters (190 feet) long, 10 meters wide and 30 meters high, were received Tuesday near the sea port of Colon in an official ceremony headed by Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli, who pulled a lever that set in motion the slow unloading process.
