Organizations Claim Abuse by Private Security Agents at U.S.-Mexico Border

Private security personnel hired to guard the San Ysidro Port of Entry on the U.S.-Mexico border have been slammed for their abuse of authority, activists in San Diego say.

Christian Ramirez, human rights director for Alliance San Diego, told Efe that he recently suffered mistreatment at the hands of a supervisor of Paragon Systems Inc.  Paragon was purchased from Tri-S Security Corp., by Pinkerton (a Securitas subsidiary) in 2010.  Paragon was contracted by the General Services Administration to provide armed guards for federal buildings in Los Angeles and San Diego, including the San Ysidro Port of Entry.

Controversial couple LeAnn Rimes and her husband Eddie Cibrian have reportedly nabbed a reality show on VH1.

The Cuban-American actor and his country singer bride made headlines in 2009 amid rumors he was cheating on then wife Brandi Glanville with his Northern Lights co-star Rimes. Cibrian and Glanville separated in July 2009 and were officially divorced in September 2010. Just four months later, Cibrian and Rimes announced their engagement. Cibrian and Glanville have two children together.

Diego Luna, 33, appeared on Conan earlier this week and while discussing his upcoming movie with Matt Damon, “Elysium” the Mexican actor tried to teach host Conan O’Brien some Spanish slang.

However, as many of us are already aware, the literal translations to English don’t always make sense.

DREAM 9 Activists Qualify for Political Asylum Says Immigration Authorities

U.S. immigration authorities have determined that seven of the DREAM 9 activists detained in Arizona have grounds to fear persecution if they are returned to Mexico, representatives of the detainees said Tuesday.

The National Immigrant Youth Alliance’s Mohammed Abdolahi told Efe that they are shortly expecting to receive the same notification regarding the other two cases.

This is the first legal step in the process of requesting political asylum, which means that now the case will be heard by an immigration judge, who will issue a final ruling regarding the future of the nine undocumented activists, all of whom are of Mexican origin.

A veteran broadcast journalist was fatally shot Tuesday in the eastern province of Zacapa, Guatemalan authorities said.

Luis de Jesus Lima, 68, was killed by two assailants on a motorcycle as he was getting out his car in front of the radio station where he hosted a music and information program.

According to Colombian weekly Semana, Disney is teaming up with a group of young Colombians to create a superhero film based on the comic Zambo Dende: The Slave Avenger created by Nicholas Rodriguez.

Workers have started assembling the Penonome wind farm, the first alternative energy facility of its kind in Panama and the largest in Central America with more than 100 towers.

President Ricardo Martinelli and executives of Spanish-owned Union Eolica Panameña, or UEP, participated in a ceremony Monday to mark the start of the wind farm’s assembly.

Mexican-Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer has taken over the Park Avenue Tunnel running from 33rd Street to 40th Street in New York City.

Open to pedestrians between 7 am to 1 pm on August 10th and the 17th, the exhibition, “Voice Tunnel,” features an interactive light and sound installation.

The 1,400 foot long tunnel is transformed with 3000 theatrical spotlights.  Creating arches of light along the walls and ceiling, participants will be able to modify the intensity of light by their voice loudness.

The voices can be heard throughout the tunnel on various loudspeakers, with flashes of light making a Morse-like code throughout the tunnel.

A young New York man was arrested last week after reportedly posting an ad on Craigslist, intended to sell a baby.

Paul Marquez, 22, was said to be angry with a woman he had dated when he posted photos of the her two-month-old daughter on Craigslist as if the baby was his.

Brazil’s Federal Police arrested 18 people Tuesday in a crackdown on an extermination squad that operated in Natal, capital of the northeastern state of Rio Grande do Norte.

The suspects, who include 11 state and municipal police officers, have been linked to 22 homicides and five attempted homicides, Federal Police spokespersons said.

Mexican Authorities Rescue 38 Sexually Exploited Migrants

Authorities rescued 38 Central American migrants who were being sexually exploited in the southeastern Mexican state of Chiapas, the National Migration Institute, or INM, said.

The migrants - 36 women and two men - are from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua, the INM said in a statement.

The Huachipa Zoological Park in Lima plans to put Peru’s first white tiger born in captivity on exhibit next week, veterinarian Catalina Hermoza told Efe.

“It is going to have an exhibit in the first half of this month like the other felines, so people can see it,” Hermoza said.

At least nine people died and 35 others were injured Tuesday when a bus crashed into the side of a mountain in the western Venezuelan state of Tachira, authorities said.

This is the second highway accident with a high number of victims in the past week in Venezuela. Last Wednesday, 14 people died in the central state of Guarico in a bus-truck collision.

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, who underwent surgery last week, resumed his public activities Tuesday as he presided over a small-business event in Mexico City.

At his first public activity since a July 31 procedure to remove a benign thyroid tumor, the president appeared in good health and gave without difficulty an almost 20-minute speech to inaugurate Entrepreneur Week.

Spain’s Rafael Nadal plans to return to singles action on Wednesday at the hard-court ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event in Montreal, where he will play Canadian Jesse Levine in his first match since making an early exit from Wimbledon.

Nadal, the No. 4 seed, is returning to the ATP Tour nearly six weeks after Belgium’s Steve Darcis knocked him off 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 at Wimbledon, marking the first time the Spaniard lost in the first round of a Grand Slam event.
