The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) and the Brazilian Government today launched a new initiative to help countries run their own national school meal programs to advance the nutrition and education of children.

The Centre of Excellence Against Hunger, located in the capital, Brasilia, will assist governments in Africa, Asia and Latin America by drawing on the expertise of WFP and Brazil in the fight against hunger, while promoting sustainable school feeding models and other food and nutrition safety nets.

“As a world champion in the fight against hunger, Brazil has a wealth of experience that can be shared with governments eager to learn how they achieved that success and adapt it to their own countries,” said WFP Executive Director, Josette Sheeran, who is on an official visit to the country.

“Brazil has taken the fight against hunger and malnutrition seriously and is now among those defeating hunger faster than any nation on earth. We will partner to leverage this success to other nations seeking to end hunger and malnutrition.”

The South American nation has been recognized for its Fome Zero (Zero Hunger) strategy for reducing poverty and food insecurity and its school meals program, which reaches about 45 million children per year.

The new Centre will be headed by Daniel Balaban, who has helped to provide school meals to millions of children when he was the President of the Brazilian National Education Development Fund.

During her visit to Brazil, Ms. Sheeran will also meet with President Dilma Rousseff, and commend the country for its resolve to continue the fight against hunger at home and abroad.

Funded entirely through voluntary donations, WFP is the world’s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger. Each day in 60 countries around the world, WFP provides school meals to around 22 million children.

A group of 25 young people calling themselves Los Libertarios occupied the Liceo Republica de Argentina on Calle las Mercedes in the Colonial Zone on Sunday evening demanding the government comply with the 4% of GDP stipulated in the Education Law.

The protesters took over the building and 25 of them spent the evening there. At 7:30pm two spokespersons for the group, who did not give their names, read a manifesto for the respect of the rights of Dominicans on the occasion of the 167th anniversary of the Dominican Constitution. They explained that the peaceful and symbolic takeover of the Escuela Argentina sought to call the attention and denounce the illegality imposed from the state that creates uncertainty in the population and juridical insecurity.

“We advocate for an improvement in the quality of education backed by the dignity of the teaching profession, training and better wage conditions,” declared the group. They demanded that the government fulfill Art. 197 of the General Law of Education 66-97 that grants 4% of the GDP or 16% of the National Budget to Education. They also appealed for the refurbishment of the school they had taken over.

STUDY:  The Longer Hispanic Immigrants Live in U.S. More Likely to Develop Health Problems

The longer they live in the United States, the more likely it is that Hispanic immigrants will develop health problems, a new study says.

Researchers analyzed 2007-08 data from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and discovered a dramatic increase in obesity, diabetes and hypertension rates among Hispanic immigrants who have lived in the United States for more than 20 years.

Compared to those who have lived in the United States for fewer than 10 years, Hispanic immigrants who are U.S. residents for more than 20 years are 98 percent more likely to be obese, 68 percent more likely to have hypertension, and nearly 2.5 times more likely to have diabetes, according to the researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The study results, scheduled for release Monday at the annual meeting of the American Public Health Association, were based on body mass index (BMI), blood pressure and diabetes measurements. Because this study was presented at a medical meeting, the data and conclusions should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.

The researchers took into account age, gender, education, income and other factors that could influence the likelihood of being obese or having hypertension or diabetes.

“The findings make a clear connection between communities and health. When we take a broad, comprehensive look at the communities in which U.S. immigrants live and their health status, we see that minority immigrants and their families can disproportionally experience barriers to good health. And that’s troubling,” lead researcher Leslie Cofie, a doctoral candidate at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, said in an APHA news release.

“There needs to be more work done to address the full spectrum of factors that influence health outcomes among racial and ethnic groups, including minority immigrants,” Cofie added.

Former Army General Otto Pérez Molina won some 54% of the Guatemalan vote, while Ortega garnered 67% of the votes in Nicaragua, amid allegations of electoral fraud in Sundays Presidential election.

Otto Pérez Molina, a former Guatemalan Army General has become the new president of Guatemala having garnered 54% of the nation’s vote, over the 46% of his closest rival Manuel Baldizón.

Pérez, the candidate of the right-wing Patriotic Party, promised to hire 10,000 new police officers, and deploy 2,500 more soldiers, as part of his security program to combat the nation’s high murder rates, as well as drug cartels from neighboring Mexico.

Pérez has faced criticism for alleged abuses of power during his times as army general during Guatemala’s civil war; the new president, retired from duty for the past 11 years, has said there is no evidence to back up claims of human rights violations.

Daniel Ortega was reelected with 62.7% of the Nicaraguan vote, more than double the votes of his closest opponent, Radio Personality Fabio Gadea.

Gadea refused to accept the results, and accused Ortega of stuffing ballot boxes and obfuscating the electoral process for conservatives, making it difficult to cast their vote.

United States Department of State spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the US is worried by reports of irregularities during the elections, and said that if the Nicaraguan government had nothing to hide, they should have allowed a larger number of international election observers.

International monitoring agencies present during the elections however, said voting irregularities had not changed the final result, and the secretary general of the Organization of American States, Jose Miguel Insulza said that on Sunday’s elections “Democracy and peace moved forward.”

Special Visas Give Wealthy Latin Americans Opportunity to Live in U.S.

For wealthy foreign-born businesspeople, waiting years for a U.S. visa may not be necessary if they are willing to invest at least $500,000 and create a minimum number of jobs in U.S towns.

Wealthy individuals are taking advantage of a conditional visa known as the EB-5 visas, which can turn into permanent residency status for those who invest at least $500,000 in high-unemployment or rural areas, or $1 million anywhere else. In doing so, the investors and their families can obtain the EB-5 visa.

Miami, Florida is seeing a substantial increase in the number of Latin American-born investors taking advantage of the EB-5 visas by putting up the money, moving themselves and their families to the U.S., put their children through U.S. schools, and allow someone else to manage the investment project and job creation.

Since its inception in 1990, it is estimated that about 34,000 jobs have been created by EB-5 investments.

The number of potential Latin American investors applying for the EB-5 has risen 71 percent over the last two years, with Venezuela and Mexico leading the way. Of the 95 Latin Americans who applied in 2010, 44 were accepted, and of the 163 in the first 10 months of 2011, 68 were accepted.

Stephanie Ostapowich, public affairs officer, Office of Communications, Media Relations Division, US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) said, “It’s like when you buy a season pass to Vail to ski. With EB-5, you buy a season pass to live in America and you pay $500,000 for it.”

However, there are those who do not see it that way. Those opposed to the EB-5 say it is nothing more than a way for wealthy people to buy their way into the country, and creates another avenue for investment scams.

A juror of 7 men and women have reached a verdict in the case against Dr. Conrad Murray, the man in charge of Michael Jackson’s health at the time of his death.

On the second day of deliberations, at 10:56 a.m. PT Monday morning, the jury gave three buzzes to indicate they had reached a verdict. After nine hours of deliberation, the jury found Dr. Conrad Murray GUILTY of involuntary manslaughter.

Being accused of involuntary manslaughter, Murray faces up to four years in prison, and will likely lose his medical license, ending his life as he had previously known it.

Prosecutors argued that Dr. Murray was responsible for the death of the King of Pop because he was the man ultimately responsible for Jackson’s health.

In 2009, Michael Jackson died of an overdose of the powerful anesthetic known as propofol. It was found that he also had two sedatives in his symptoms.

‘Anonymous’ Forgets About Zetas, Attacks El Salvador, Colombia

Hacktivist group ‘Anonymous’ cancelled their Nov. 5th Operation against the Zeta Cartel, but their attacks on Latin American Governments, Police institutions and Ministries persist.

Internet hacker group ‘Anonymous’ cancelled their weekend plans to attack Facebook, and expose the government and police who have links of the Zetas cartel, according to statements published in the “Anonymous Iberoamérica” blog.

Anonymous said their #OperationCartel posed unnecessary risks for civilians, as the terrorist group threatened to murder innocent people for every contact the group made public.

Furthermore, the Anonymous member that had been allegedly kidnapped by the Zetas was released, and Anonymous reports say the released Anon has already fled Veracruz.

In an unexpected twist, Anonymous Iberoamérica published a post yesterday accusing a Mexican Government Intelligence agent of instigating Anons carry out #OpCartel regardless; The hackers analyzed IP address information of a particularly incendiary chat user, and found its location to be www.cisen.gob.mx, Mexico’s intelligence Agency. Click on the transcript below to enlarge.

Instead of exposing the Zetas or taking down Facebook over the weekend, Anonymous launched ‘#Operation JusticeElSalvador’ attacking the websites of El Salvador’s presidency and government ministries.

The website of the presidency was taken offline after it was bombarded with 30 million hits on Saturday. Websites for the legislative assembly, the national civil police and the ministries of justice, economics and labor were also targeted this past weekend.

On Monday, the hacktivists launched #OpLey30, targeting the Colombian Education Ministry’s website; the operation takes its name from a controversial proposal to reform education laws in ways beneficial for business, but detrimental to education.

Take a look at the tweet feed below for more news about Anonymous and their operations.

Eighth-Grade Student Nick Martinez Suspended For Hugging Friend in School

These days, schools are both praised and criticized for their zero tolerance policies, but the story of a young boy and girl in Florida suspended for hugging in school has many wondering if their Palm Bay school went too far.

Nick Martinez, 14, of Southwest Middle School, and his friend, a 14-year-old female student at the school were suspended from school due to the school district’s policy of not allowing any sort of public display of affection.

According to Southwest’s student handbook, a one-day out-of-school suspension can be given to students kissing at the school. Those caught hugging or hold hands can receive a dean’s detention or suspension.

District policy does no stipulate any difference between an unwanted hug and one in which both parties consent.

ImageA spokesperson for the school told local Fox affiliate that the policy was put in place to prevent wasting time on grey area situations.

Though the school board said it had no plans to change the policy, Nancy Crescente, Martinez’s mother, said she plans on speaking with the board.

The best friends now have suspensions on their permanent records.

Martinez said he did not realize he was doing anything wrong until the principal escorted him and his friend to the dean’s office.

‘Honestly, I didn’t know because I didn’t think hugging was a bad thing,’ he told WKMG. ‘I didn’t know you could get suspended for it.’

Suicide at Sea: Murder Suspect Takes Own Life En Route to Cuba

Suicide at Sea: Murder Suspect Takes Own Life En Route to Cuba

A Texas Latino was on the run after becoming the lead suspect in a Texas murder case, but with U.S. Coast Guard officers hot on his trail Friday, he chose to commit suicide rather than go in to custody.

Noel Sosa-Ruiz, 41, reportedly stole a friend’s boat Friday, leaving only a note that said he needed to escape because of a warrant against him. He left from Key West, and is said to have been heading for Cuba.

According to Magaly Rivas, the boat’s owner, the note Sosa-Ruiz left said in Spanish, “I am condemned to die because I killed my wife and I have to leave. Forgive me.

After the crew of Customs and Border Protection Dash-8 aircraft reported that two red flares had been fired from a center console vessel, a U.S. Coast Guard cutter was called in. As the cutter approached what they thought was a stranded boater about 11 miles off the coast of the Bahama’s Cay Sal Island, Sosa-Ruiz, shot himself in the chest on the 21-foot boat he’d stolen. He was only about 20 miles from Cuba’s northern coast.

In October, a warrant was issued for Sosa-Ruiz by Houston police, after he allegedly killed his 29-year-old common-law wife Yodanis Cruz-Rojas. She was the mother of the couple’s two children. Police say Sosa-Ruiz walked into the dental office where Cruz-Rojas worked on October 27th and fatally shot her, then ran.

It is said he managed to get from Texas to Kissimmee, Florida where his sister lived. He then drove her van to the Rivas’, where he stole their center console boat and took off for Cuba.

When Coast Guard officers arrived at the boat, which had run out of gas and was just drifting, the boarding team approached the vessel in a small boat. Upon boarding the stolen boat, the team confirmed that Sosa-Ruiz was dead.

A .40 caliber Berretta was retrieved and it believed to be the gun he used on himself.

Sosa-Ruiz came to the U.S four years ago. He was smuggled into U.S. waters before jumping from the boat and swimming to shore.

His body is now in the custody of the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Seven undocumented immigrants were apparently being held against their will, until ransom was paid, in a residential area of Houston.

Houston police were contacted late yesterday by one of the immigrants who was able to get his hands on a cell phone.  He called the police and said he and others were being held hostage until their families paid an undisclosed ransom.

This is the second such incident in less than two months to occur in Houston.  Last month on October 24, 18 people were rescued when they were being held by a human smuggling ring.

When police arrived at the 7200 block of Eppes Street in southeast Houston, seven unidentified individuals were rescued and four human smugglers arrested.  However, when the police arrived several individuals had fled the home.  All the undocumented immigrants were turned over to immigration officials.

Houston is a popular human trafficking hub because of its diverse population that allows immigrants and smugglers to blend in without drawing much attention.  Human smuggling is the third most popular illicit activity in the world garnering $9.5 billion in revenue.
