A week of torrential rains throughout the Central American region have left at least 66 dead and displaced thousands of others, with Honduras suffering the most losses at 28.

The rains started mid-week and continued through the weekend resulting in flooding and mudslides. Some of the victims died from lightning striking them.  El Salvador with 24 dead has declared a state of emergency and are reporting many have been buried by mudslides.

In Guatemala a state of emergency was also declared and are reporting over two thousand home have been destroyed and eight bridges submerged.

Many Central Americans were isolated when roads were washed out and debris closed other access roads.  The southern regions of Choluteca and Valle were the hardest hit in Guatemala and are where most of the deaths were being reported.

Texas Rangers Fans Say Gracias to Nelson Cruz

Texas Rangers Fans Say Gracias to Nelson Cruz

The Texas Rangers are returning to the World Series some 50 years after their last appearance and much of that is due to their right-fielder Nelson Cruz.

The right-fielder not only helped the Rangers beat the Detroit Tigers, 15-5, in the last game of the series last night, he made history along the way.

The Dominican native had 6 home runs in the 6 game series and 13 RBI’s which is record setting.  Cruz was also the first player to hit a game-ending grand slam in post-season history and the first player to hit a walk-off grand slam in a post season game.  In last nights game he scored a two-run homer.

Clearly the Tigers never figured out how to shut Cruz down and underestimated his underdog determination - he had been relegated to the minor leaguesby the Rangers just 3 ½ year ago as his career was languishing.

For all his efforts Nelson Cruz, 31-years-old, won the American League Championship MVP award.  Watch Cruz’ six league home runs here

Occupy Chicago started their version of this national movement peacefully until they refused to vacate city park property that effective closes at 11:00 p.m.

Occupy Chicago had a peak of 2,000 or so protesters in Grant Park on Saturday that dwindled down to 500 this early morning.  The remaining protesters pitched tents even though Chicago police warned them the park closed at 11:00pm and they would be arrested if they remained.

Occupy Chicago is an off-shoot of what is being called a Global Day of Occupation which started with Occupy Wall Street in New York.  The protesters have been protesting for the last 23 days in front of the Federal Reserve and on Saturday urged others to join them in a rally of support.

After being asked to leave again around 2:00 a.m. in the morning a total of 175 protesters were arrested for violating city code.  They left vowing to return and chanting “The whole world is watching,” recalling the chant of the 1968 Democratic Convention.

POLL:  Majority of Americans Still Putting Border Control Ahead of Legalizing Undocumented

POLL:  Majority of Americans Still Putting Border Control Ahead of Legalizing Undocumented

Photo: Americans Focused on border Security

Most voters continue to believe as they have for years that immigration legislation should focus on border control.  They also remain supportive of a welcoming immigration policy with a few key restrictions.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 63% of Likely U.S. Voters say when it comes to immigration legislation, gaining control of the border is more important than legalizing the status of undocumented workers already living in this country.  Thirty-two percent (32%) feel legalizing the status of these illegal aliens is more important.

These findings are consistent with surveys back to July 2006.

Fifty-seven percent (57%) of voters favor a welcoming immigration policy designed to keep out only national security threats, criminals and those who come here to live off America’s welfare system. Twenty-seven percent (27%) disagree with this kind of immigration policy, while 16% are undecided.  These findings also have shown little change in surveys dating back to 2006.

The W Hotel in Santiago Under Siege by Justin Bieber Fans – WATCH (VIDEO)

The Bieber fever that is spreading throughout Latin America has not seemed to die down.  This past Friday the Bieber was suppose to arrive in Chile to continue his “My World” tour throughout the region.

Chilean fans started gathering outside of his hotel, The W Hotel in Santiago hoping to get a glance of him.  Things got so out of control that Chilean officials urged Bieber not to come in the front door fearful of a stampede and instead gave him permission to land on the roof via helicopter.

Bieber performed yesterday at the Estadio Nacional without incident.  The ‘Bieber Fever Chile’ fan club has over 80,000 fans which are organizing a gift basket for him and his crew with things representative of the country.

God only knows what type of send off Latin America will give the singer.

Mexico Moves to Recognize Food as Constitutional Right

Mexico Moves to Recognize Food as Constitutional Right

A United Nations expert today welcomed Mexico’s promulgation of a constitutional reform that recognizes the right to food in the country, and urged authorities to implement measures to give all Mexicans access to this human right.

“This is a great step forward for Mexico,” said the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food Olivier De Schutter, who carried out an official visit to the country in June. “With this reform, Mexico joins a select group of countries around the world that have enshrined the right to food in their constitutions.”

“Now is the time to implement this reform for the benefit of all Mexicans by approving corresponding legislation,” he added.

Mr. De Schutter said the reform to articles 4 and 27 of the Mexican Constitution is particularly relevant in the current context of rising food prices as it highlights the need for States to guarantee access to adequate nutrition for their citizens.

Recently, a UN report warned that high food prices are likely to continue and possibly increase over the next decade.

The report, The State of Food Insecurity in the World 2011, recommended that governments have a transparent and predictable regulatory environment in place that promotes private investment and an increase in farm productivity.
