We have run several stories highlighting the Los Zetas cartels recruitment of children to perform different functions within their organization. Authorities report they have arrested this past weekend, a 13-year-old girl who admitted working as a hawk for the cartel.

Officials from the State and Federal Police received a report about a group of heavily armed people in the municipality of Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco, and a Police operation was immediately implemented.  The authorities confronted the gunman and a gunfight broke out. Ultimately three cartel members were captured while eight Cartel members escaped.

There were no deaths or injuries reported during the confrontation. Those arrested were identified as Alejandro Rodriguez Ramirez, 35, Jose Antonio Perez Gomez, 43, and a 13-year-old female who was the first to admit that they were Los Zetas.

Confiscated during the raid were six AK-47 rifles, two R-15 rifles, a pistol, cartridges, magazines, a machete that had traces of blood, cartridge belts, radio equipment, 303 bundles of crack cocaine, 317 doses of cocaine powder, a motorcycle, two trucks, and a car.

The detainees and confiscated items were turned over to the authorities.

Pollster Says Hispanics Are Turning Away From Religion

Pollster Says Hispanics Are Turning Away From Religion

According to pollster George Barna, Hispanics appear to be turning away from traditional organized religion.

In the fourth part of the Barna Group’s “State of the Church” report, “major faith shifts [were] evident among…Hispanics since 1991.”

The report states the following:

The ethnic group that reflected the most profound level of religious change over the last 20 years was Hispanics. Not only did Hispanics see the greatest number of the 14 religious variables shift, but the magnitude of the changes they have experienced dwarfed the changes relevant to white and black adults.

• Of the six religious behavior factors tracked, Hispanics have experienced statistically significant change related to five of those domains.
• Church attendance dropped by 21 percentage points, from 54% to 33%.
• Adult Sunday school attendance among Hispanics declined from 28% to just 9%.
• Bible reading plummeted from 55% to 30%.
• Attending a church of 600 or more people is much more likely these days among Hispanics. While that was the case among less than 1% of Hispanics in 1991, 24% attend a large church today.
• The percentage of unchurched Hispanic adults has doubled in the last two decades, jumping from 20% in 1991 to 40% today.
• The only behavior that did not transition substantially in the past 20 years was church volunteerism. While even that statistic sank from 22% back in 1991 to 13% in 2011, the gap is not sufficiently large to exceed the maximum possible sampling error.

There were many changes in the religious beliefs of Hispanics, too. Of the eight core beliefs measured, Hispanic adults showed major changes in relation to half of them.

• In 1991, two-thirds of Hispanic adults (66%) said their religious faith was very important to them. Today, only half hold that view (51%).
• Orthodox views of God are far less common among Hispanics today. In 1991, almost nine out of ten (88%) held such an outlook. Now, barely six out of ten do so (62%).
• The veracity of the Bible has taken a beating in Hispanic circles over the last two decades. In 1991, 62% of Hispanic adults strongly agreed that the Bible is accurate in all of the principles it teaches. That has dropped to just 32% now.
• Evangelism is viewed much more dimly these days by Hispanics. While about half of them (48%) felt they had a personal responsibility to share their religious beliefs with those who believe differently back in 1991, less than two out of ten (18%) possess that same view today.

The guerrilla group detonated a bomb hidden inside a “Panela” block, murdering NGO leader Maria Elizabeth Quiróz.  “Panela” is a byproduct of sugar cane, widely popular in Colombia and all of Latin America as a natural sweetener, and dissolved in hot water as the “beverage of the people.”

Colombia’s fourth brigade officials said in a statement that the explosion happened inside a private home in North-West Antioquia.

Authorities said Quiróz was known in the area for her relentless social efforts, and her many community service endeavors. She had been a victim of FARC once before, in 1999, when antisocial bandits from the 36th front of the terrorist group, assassinated her brother.

The explosion also caused minor wounds to a passerby, and two engineer soldiers working in the nearby construction of a road.

TSA Accused of Racially Profiling Hispanics at Newark Airport

According an internal report from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Hispanic passengers passing through New Jersey’s Newark International Airport have been subject to racial profiling under the guise of national security.

Homeland Security officials have ordered TSA security screeners to halt the use of a program called Screening of Passengers by Observation Techniques (SPOT) which appears to show bias against Hispanics.

In recent months, reports have been surfacing that Hispanics – namely Mexican and Dominican travelers – are being unfairly singled out by TSA agents, and having their passports and visas put under heavier scrutiny.

Hispanics being singled out and arrested for immigration violations accounted for 40 percent of the airport’s total arrests after implementing the SPOT program, according to an audit done by the Government Accountability Office.

The GAO report, which questioned the effectiveness of SPOT, was released in May 2010, but drew little interest until media reports pointed out specific incidents.

The TSA claims that any instances of racial profiling at Newark are due the behavior of rogue employees that have misused SPOT to “boost their referral numbers in an attempt to appear productive, “ said New Jersey Real-Time News.

Brazilian Comedian Rafinha Bastos: Twitter’s Most Influential User

Brazilian Comedian Rafinha Bastos: Twitter’s Most Influential User

Who is this Brazilian comedian, more influential on Twitter than Lady Gaga, President Obama and Kim Kardashian?

Recently, the New York Times asked research firm Twitalyzer, to try and figure out who is the most influential person on Twitter; they came back with something called the Influence Index, a formula that counts the number of times somebody’s Twitter name is mentioned by other users and measures how much someone tweets, and further affects the resulting conversations.

They also came back with an interesting bit of news. The most influential person on twitter, is not Lady Gaga, not President Obama; incendiary Twitter-ers Charlie Sheen or José Canseco, you say? Nope.

The most influential user in the Twitteverse is @RafinhaBastos.

But who is @RafinhaBastos?

Raised in Porto Alegre, Bastos studied journalism in college before winning a basketball scholarship in 1999 that took him to Chadron State College in Nebraska.

To stay in touch with friends back home he began to e-mail jokes and parodies of Brazilian pop culture figures.

Bastos’ sports career was cut short by an injury, and he went back to Brazil where he got a job as a reporter at a local television station, always doing comedy on the side.

At a time when Facebook wasn’t even in the picture, Brazilians were using Orkut, their own social networking site, where Bastos cultivated a small following. When YouTube became the go-to site for video entertainment, Bastos began up-loading bits of his stand-up work for people to see. Then when Twitter became the new sensation, he quickly jumped on that bandwagon, tweeting jokes and humorous observations on daily life at least 5 times a day. By interacting one on one with his followers , he has been catapulted onto the top of the most influential people on Twitter list.

LATINO BLOTTER: Iowa Man Arrested For Having Sex With Cat, Animal Dies

Wednesday, a Hispanic man was arrested after he admitted he had sex with a cat and then threw it from his apartment’s balcony.

Witnesses told Council Bluffs police they saw a man with his pants down standing on a seventh floor balcony. They also reported seeing the nearly naked man throw a cat out the window.

According to the police report, after arriving on the scene, officers were pointed to the apartment of Gerardo Martinez. He reportedly answered the door with his pants down and wearing no shirt.

Officers told Martinez, 29, to pull up his pants and asked him about the cat. He initially denied having one, and admitted to being high on methamphetamine. Later, while being questioned further, he changed his story, saying his boyfriend threw the cat three hours earlier.

The police informed him that witnesses had seen the cat being thrown more recently and Martinez admitted to having sex with the cat and to throwing it out the window along with a pornographic DVD.

Witnesses later confirmed that he was the man they had seen in the balcony.

Martinez turned 30 on Thursday and was taken to Pottawattamie County Jail. He has been charged with bestiality, indecent exposure, and animal torture, yet still only faces up to 5 years in jail, as all charges are misdemeanor offenses.

Officers found the cat on the sidewalk below the balcony, bleeding and barely breathing. It later died as a result of the injuries sustained from the fall.

On the heels of 33 Mexican soldiers and 4 humvees ‘inadvertently’ crossing in the U.S. another ‘invasion’ incident has occurred over the weekend.  This time a Mexican military helicopter landed at the Laredo, Texas international airport instead of the Nuevo Laredo, Mexico – a sixteen-mile mistake.

The incident occurred on Saturday with reports coming out about the incursion late Sunday.  Upon landing border patrol met with the helicopter occupants and allowed them to return to Mexico.

The Mexican government had just announced that a 20-day operation called “Lince Norte” or Northern Lynx just wrapped up.  The operation was conducted along the Texas-Mexico border and targeted the Zetas drug operation.  It is not known if either the humvees and helicopter were taking part in the operation when they accidentally crossed in U.S. territory.

Meanwhile, Laredo’s mayor Raul Salinas is assuring residents that Mexican operatives aren’t just trying to push the envelope and see how far they can get across the border.  Other residents are calling for a full investigation.

After More Than Two Decades, Mexico’s Army Once Again Allowing Women to Be Paratroopers

After More Than Two Decades, Mexico’s Army Once Again Allowing Women to Be Paratroopers

For the first time in 22 years, women in the Mexican Army are being trained as paratroopers.

In 1989, the army suspended training for female paratroopers, not specifying the reason(s). But for 71 women among the 270 recruits, that training is open to them once more.

Though it is unclear whether the program will continue permanently, by including women in the program, the Mexican Army is giving itself more paratroopers.

Army officials have stated that the women go through the exact same training as their male peers, allowing no special treatment.

For the Mexican Army’s paratroopers, basic training is four weeks, and when the fear they all face when jumping out of a plane has no gender.

Currently, for women entering Mexico’s Army, “paratrooping” is not a career option, though in allowing them to go through the program once again, that policy could change as well.

The hacker group published a YouTube video announcing their plan, and urging others to take down Facebook on November 5th.

The video says the intention this time is not to overload the social network with service requests—the hacker’s modus operandi so far, but to obliterate Facebook from the world wide web, destroy it.

Anonymous argues that Facebook systematically violates user’s privacy, and as a usual practice, provides government agencies with sensitive, private user information. “Facebook knows more about you than your family” the video says.

The U.S. Open of Surging that concluded this Sunday did not only make news for crowning 10-time ASP Champion Kelly Slater but for being the scene of a Mexican drug smuggling drop.

On Sunday at the Huntington Beach Pier as the surfing open was taking place, surfers observed a fishing boat in the competition area early in the morning.  The fishermen either realized they weren’t suppose to be there or realized they didn’t want to be noticed so they took off and threw a package overboard.

Police boats that were nearby gave chase and arrested three Mexican nationals that were attempting to smuggle drugs into the U.S. with California’s Huntington Beach as the drop site.

Alabama Issues Response in Court to Multiple Court Filings Against Its Immigration Law

Alabama Issues Response in Court to Multiple Court Filings Against Its Immigration Law

The state of Alabama has filed a response to the multitude of lawsuits against its new immigration law, H.B. 56.  In its filing, consisting of 159 pages, the state asserts that its new law is cooperative in nature with federal immigration law and wholeheartedly denies the law is in anyway discriminatory.

The new law enacted in June would affect virtually every aspect of an unauthorized immigrant’s daily life, from employment to housing to transportation to entering into and enforcing contracts to going to school.

Alabama’s H.B. 56 goes further than Arizona’s controversial S.B. 1070 in that school administrators are being asked to check how many students are registering without birth certificates, hence the immigration status of their students.  The law doesn’t mandate that they turn students away if they are undocumented.  The state justified the need to check immigration status as a fiscal policy matter, needing to determine the impact illegal aliens are having on its education budget.

The law is set to go into effect on September 1st unless Alabama’s court issues an injunction blocking it.  A hearing before Chief U.S. District Judge Sharon Blackburn is set for August 24th.

With a solemn Eucharistic celebration, presided by the papal legate, Cardinal Carlos Amigo Vallejo, Archbishop Emeritus of Sevilla, the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic yesterday concluded the jubilee celebrations for the 500th anniversary of its foundation by Pope Julius II, on August 8 1511.

Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez, Archbishop of Santo Domingo and prelate of America, called on the Catholic people to participate in the Eucharist at the Cathedral of Santo Domingo.

In a message which Pope Benedict XVI sent to Cardinal Lopez Rodriguez expressed his hope in the celebrations of 500 years of the creation of the first diocese in the Americas in the hope that this event “will bring abundant fruits of faith and commitment of priests, religious and lay people who fervently preach the Gospel”.

In addition to the archdiocese of Santo Domingo, Pope Julius II (Giuliano della Rovere), who with the Romanus Pontifex, formed in the same period the ecclesiastical districts of La Concepcion de La Vega, the island of Hispaniola, and the district of San Juan, in Puerto Rico.  Cardinal Amigo Vallejo presided over the ceremony, according to the privileges granted by the Holy See to the papal legates. The ceremony was also celebrated by the Apostolic Nuncio Mgr. Jozef Wesolows, and other members of the Dominican Episcopal Conference, and one hundred priests and deacons.

The Archdiocese of Santo Domingo, since its foundation in 1511, has had 43 bishops, 32 archbishops and two cardinals, as well as several officials of the Church and apostolic administrators.
