Woman Says Principal “Crossed the Line” When Giving Graduation Speech in English and Spanish (VIDEO)

“Class of 2011, I want to congratulate you for all your accomplishments this year,” Principal of Whittell High School in Nevada said to his graduating class. He then said it in Spanish as a nice gesture to the Spanish-speaking students and their family members. He went through his whole speech in this manner.

Principal Crespin Esquivel did not expect that repeating his speech in Spanish at a school whose second largest ethnic group is Hispanic would offend one woman enough that she sparked an online controversy.

The woman, who said she sat through both the English and Spanish speeches, wrote a letter to a local newspaper claiming the principal “crossed the line”, “was inappropriate”, and “took away from the recognition the students deserve.”

The debate over the bilingual comments are similar to a story making headlines after U.S. Soccer Team goalie Tim Howard complained that the awards ceremony after his team’s loss to Mexico in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final on Saturday was in Spanish.

“CONCACAF should be ashamed of itself,” Howard told reporters. “I think it was a f*cking disgrace that the entire post-match ceremony was in Spanish. You can bet your ass if we were in Mexico City it wouldn’t be all in English.”

As for Principal Esquivel, he stands by his actions, “I figured why not do it in Spanish? I think it’s important for me to make sure all the families feel comfortable.”

“To me we live in America and that’s the beauty of America: that we all bring our backgrounds our cultures our languages and that’s what makes us who we are,” he said. “I’m doing what is right for all my families and I know I’ll take a hit for it, but it won’t stop me from doing what’s right for my families.”

34 year old Raymond Velázquez’s rap tantrum caused Times Square to shut down on Tuesday morning.

According to NYPD officials, Velázquez was asked to leave the premises of the MTV Network Headquarters, after loitering about trying to promote his CD.

Velázquez then climbed up a lighting post and performed a few rap songs, while throwing copies of his CD to passersby.

Police shut down surrounding streets in New York’s Times Square for about two hours, inflated a giant yellow airbag below the pole and extended a NYPD emergency vehicle ladder, from which officers tried to persuade Velázquez to climb down.

Vélazquez, whose stage name is “C.I. Joe” was led in handcuffs to an ambulance that took him to a healthcare facility for a psychological assessment.

Though Mexico and others in Latin America had hoped Mexico’s Agustín Carstens would be appointed as the next International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief, the company’s Executive Board selected France’s Christine Lagarde to serve as Managing Director and Madame Chairman of the company, and released the following statement:

The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) today selected Christine Lagarde to serve as IMF Managing Director and Madame Chairman of the Executive Board for a five-year term starting on July 5, 2011. The selection of Ms. Lagarde by the 24-member Executive Board representing the IMF’s 187 member countries brings to conclusion the selection process initiated by the Executive Board on May 20, 2011. According to the agreed procedures, the Board had agreed to meet with Mr. Agustín Carstens and Ms. Lagarde for the post. The candidates met bilaterally with Executive Directors, as well as the Executive Board, during June 20-23, 2011. In these meetings, Mr. Carstens and Ms. Lagarde had the opportunity to present all relevant information concerning their specific candidacies.

ImageThe Executive Board agreed that both were well qualified candidates and the objective was to select one by consensus. “At the same time, I hope that under Ms. Lagarde’s direction, the IMF will make meaningful progress in strengthening the governance of the institution, so as to assure its legitimacy, cohesiveness, and ultimately, its effectiveness.

“Lastly, I full-heartedly express my gratitude for all the support that my candidacy received from different corners of the world.”

Authorities haven’t been able to charge the man, as they haven’t been able to pull the body from the oil drum, sealed with concrete.

A Colombian man was pushing a hot dog cart down a busy Bogotá street at 9:00pm Monday night. A putrid stench, and the suspicious way in which the man struggled with the cart alerted neighbors who contacted police.

When the police arrived, the man panicked and confessed that he was using the hot dog stand to cart around an oil drum that contained his own mother’s remains.

The suspect told officers his mother had passed away last year after falling down the stairs. He said he didn’t report her demise out of fear, and instead opted for hiding the corpse in the oil drum, and sealing it with concrete, only to abandon it in a nearby parking garage to be retrieved last evening.

As forensics try to recover the body, the man has been placed under arrest, though he will not be charged until the identity of the body and the exact cause of death have been confirmed.

The Los Angeles Dodgers filed for bankruptcy protection on Monday in a Delaware court with owner Frank McCourt citing interference from Major League Baseball’s (MLB) commissioner Bud Selig as the main reason for the club’s failure.

Much of the team’s woes started two years ago when Jamie and Frank McCourt filed for divorce and as owners of the club, allegedly brought the Dodgers to ruin as they battled each other, leaving the team to take the fall.

In April, MLB took charge of the Dodgers to ensure is would “be guided appropriately in the future,” and appointed former Texas Rangers President Tom Schieffer to monitor the team on behalf of Selig.

McCourt says that MLB’s choice to reject a $3 billion agreement with the FOX network for future broadcasting rights for the club.

In a statement, Selig said that the FOX deal, as well as this bankruptcy filing is harmful to the club and serves more to keep money in McCourt’s pocket than to run the franchise.

“We have consistently communicated to Mr. McCourt that any potential solution to his problems that contemplates mortgaging the future of the Dodgers franchise to the long-term detriment of the club, its loyal fans and the game of baseball would not be acceptable,” Selig said. “To date, the ideas and proposals that I have been asked to consider have not been consistent with the best interests of baseball.”

So far, there is now word on whether the team plans to sell the trademarked name “Los Doyers” given to the team by enthusiastic Spanish-speaking fans.

Weekend at Sheen’s: Dumped, Dead, Possible New Deal?

Weekend at Sheen’s: Dumped, Dead, Possible New Deal?

Photo: Charlie Sheen

What’s new with Chuck Sheen? We’ll in a nutshell: he’s goddess-less, his 2 ½ men character might get the death treatment, and he might have an ace up his sleeve to bring him back to “winning”.

Goddesslessness

It was only a few months ago when Sheen paraded around his live-in “goddesses”, and bought them $800,000 worth of goodies; Sheen must’ve run out of tiger juice, as porn star Bree Olson dumped him via text message on April, and the other goddess walked out on him last weekend.

Nataly Kenly finally wised up, and moved out of the Sheen mansion last week. Now Sheen wants the car he gave her back—a Mercedes, as soon as possible.

Good Bye Pork Pie

On the professional front he doesn’t appear to be faring much better.

Entertainment sources worldwide report that “Two and a Half Men” creator Chuck Lorre and fellow producers are thinking about explaining Charlie Sheen’s sudden absence by having him die in a violent car-crash in next season’s opener!  Dios Mio!

The tragic death plot line, would put Allen (John Cryer) and Jake (Angus T. Jones) in a precarious situation, as they’d have to put the house for sale, to cover for the ample debt accrued by the ever-partying uncle.

Enter Ashton Kutcher. Kutcher, would buy the house, and sympathize with the Harpers, eventually allowing them to live in his house.

It sounds a little cheesy, but plausible. Specially if one considers that the whole going-out-the-cliff ousting of Sheen’s character could be Lorre poking fun at the two times Sheen’s own vehicles went off the edge of Mullholland Drive.

Good News

But not all might be over for Sheen. The light at the end of the tunnel comes from “RadarOnline” who posted an exclusive story, assuring that Sheen was in talks with Lionsgate, to star in a sitcom that would also be based on his own persona, but it would be “raunchier and more outrageous, which is perfect for Charlie!.”

The article went on to say that if picked up, it would earn Sheen more money than ever, and that networks and cable channels were making bids to back up the project, with TBS in the lead.

Lionsgate, however has declined to comment on the news, and TBS has denied eeven wanting anything to do with Sheen.

Congressman Smith Looks to Block Obama Administration’s (Unused) Ability to Stop Deportations

Congressman Smith Looks to Block Obama Administration’s (Unused) Ability to Stop Deportations

Photo: Congressman Smith Looks to Block Obama Administration's (Unused) Ability to Stop Deportations

Texas Rep. Lamar Smith is sponsoring a bill that serves to block President Obama’s administration from using its executive power to grant amnesty to undocumented immigrants.

The Republican congressman’s bill comes after the head of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement endorsed the practice of not deporting undocumented immigrants arrested for minor crimes, those in school, or those with family members in the U.S. military.

The Obama administration has yet to use the very power that Smith’s bill would take away, so many find it curious that he and others backing the bill would try stopping the possibility of something that could have already happened, but has not.

What is also interesting is the fact that Cong. Smith had previously pushed for this very power to be in the presidents hands. He signed a letter to then-Attorney General Janet Reno in 1999 urging her to help stop the deportation of undocumented family members of U.S. citizens.

A portion of the 1999 letter read:

We write to you because some believe you have discretion to alleviate some of the hardships, and we wish to solicit your views as to why you’ve been unwilling to exercise such authority. True hardship cases call for the exercise of such discretion.

The legislation that Smith is now trying to get passed, the Hinder the Administration’s Legalization Temptation Act (the HALT Act) calls for, not all presidents to be stripped of this executive power, just President Obama.

The HALT Act states that its provision would not apply “to the next president whom the American people elect,” just President Obama.

Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) stated that he found the HALT Act “concerning,” as its provisions only apply to the current president.

“If it’s good public policy, it should be left in everyone’s hands; if it’s bad public policy, it should be abolished. He’s agreeing that it’s good public policy, or he would abolish it, but saying [Obama] would abuse it. It’s just politics, politics, politics.”

Mexico Tourism Board Shocked Princess Cruises Cancels Trips to Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan

Tourism officials in Mexico are reeling after Princess Cruises announced the cancellation of their calls in Puerto Vallarta for the rest of the year. This announcement follows a similar one three months ago stating that calls to Mazatlan would also be canceled citing safety concerns.

Princess spokeswoman Karen Candy told USA TODAY, “As the safety and security of our passengers and crew is our highest priority, and based on the continued violence in these areas, we’ve made the decision to cancel our calls to Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan.”

Puerto Vallarta is one of three major ports in the Mexican Riviera, along with Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas.

Though Princess Cruises is the first to cancel calls to Puerto Vallarta, money are now wondering if other cruise lines like Carnival and Holland America will make similar decisions.

Rodolfo Lopez Negrete, chief operating officer of the Mexico Tourism Board, insists that “Puerto Vallarta is a perfectly safe destination. We are very surprised and clearly concerned about the announcement of Princess Cruises pulling out.”

“Mexico is a very large country,” he added. “If there are some episodes of violence up in the hills of the state of Jalisco that doesn’t mean that Puerto Vallarta is an unsafe place for tourists.”

In ten separate incidents over the weekend, Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents rescued a total of 25 individuals suffering from varying states of dehydration. Twenty-three individuals were Mexican nationals and two were Guatemalan citizens who were all illegally present in the U.S.

In an incident on Friday, agents from the Tucson Sector Border Patrol Search, Trauma, and Rescue Unit responded to an emergency call from four illegal aliens in distress near Big Fields, Ariz. When agents arrived on scene, they discovered a 33-year-old Mexican man going in and out of consciousness. He was stabilized and transported to a local hospital for treatment. BORSTAR agents treated the other three Mexican males at the scene for dehydration before taking them into custody and transporting them for processing.

In an incident on Saturday, a citizen called to report an illegal alien who appeared to be in distress. A Casa Grande agent trained as an emergency medical technician responded and encountered a 27-year-old Guatemalan man suffering from severe dehydration. The man was stabilized and transported to a hospital for treatment.

As the temperatures rise, the Border Patrol is stressing the hazards faced when attempting to cross the Sonora Desert through its dangerous conditions along with the legal consequences faced upon apprehension. Smugglers continue to put lives in danger by leading them through the harsh desert terrain, often abandoning them when they are physically unable to continue. In addition, those who cross illegally face legal consequences.
