A politician in the South American country has claimed that one of the sons of Muammar Gaddafi, the Libyan leader, is in hiding on an island off the coast of Venezuela.

Orlando Fernandez Medina said sources within the Venezuelan government had told him that one of Col. Gaddafi’s sons arrived on the island of Margarita around four days ago.

The Libyan leader has seven sons including Saif al-Islam, who has a PhD from the London School of Economics and recently appeared on television to warn of a possible civil war, and Mutassim, who is Libya’s National Security Adviser.

A columnist in one Venezuelan newspaper, El Universal, claimed that there was intelligence to suggest that one of Gaddafi’s wives and four of her daughters were also now on Margarita Island.

Margarita Island is well known to Col. Gaddafi as he attended a summit for South American and African leaders there in 2009.

At Least 400 Homes Have Been Destroyed in Mudslides in Bolivia’s Capital, La Paz

Prolonged Heavy rains are being blamed for a hilltop located in the capital city of La Paz to give way and destroy at least 400 homes.  The mudslide is being described by Bolivian officials as the “worst that La Paz has ever seen.”

The government of La Paz started evacuating late Saturday when the hills, in the Callapa district, started moving.  Today it completely gave way destroying the homes, cracked roads and is now affecting neighborhoods in low lying areas.  The mudslide affected a 200 to 250 acre area, impacting 5,000 residents but no fatalities have been reported.

Mudslides are common in the capital city because the city sits 11,900 ft above sea level surrounded by hills that have communities of people’s homes perched on top.

Cubans Fear- Go Bankrupt or Prosper…

For those who grew up in a country where the state, for decades, has been the monopoly employer, to be forced to make a living independently is like jumping into the void. Thus, workers are overcome with fear, lately, as they await the publication of the dreaded list of names of those who will lose their jobs. Not only do fears flourish, but also opportunism and favoritism. The decision of who will keep their places and who will not is made by the directors of each workplace and we already know about cases where it is not the most capable to remain, but those closest to the director. Ironically, the positions they are trying to keep are underpaid, and the loss of a quarter of the workforce does not mean — for now — a salary increase for those who stay.

Downsizing meetings occur in every workplace, even in such sensitive sectors as Public Health. These meetings decide something more important than monthly salaries or belonging to a certain company or institution. It is also a time when people’s eyes are opened to a different Cuba, where the premise of full employment is not proclaimed to the four winds and where working for oneself appears as a bleak and uncertain option. Some exchange the white coat for barber’s scissors, or the syringe for an oven where they bake pizza and bread. They will learn about the inevitable march from economic independence to political independence, they will go bankrupt or prosper, they will lie on their tax returns or honestly report how much they have earned. In the end, they will embark on a new and difficult path, where Papa state cannot support them, but nor will he have the power to punish them.

Former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel still has an estimated $2.1 million left in his campaign fund after winning the Chicago mayor’s race.

The campaign put together the figure following questions from reporters after Emanuel said he would lend a hand in some aldermanic runoff races in April.

Spokesman Ben LaBolt said the final tally could still vary a bit. Emanuel started January with $8.3 million on hand for his mayoral bid.

Emanuel will have a new crop of aldermen to work with in the City Council when he takes office in May.

He easily beat five opponents to replace the retiring Mayor Richard Daley, who didn’t seek a seventh term.

¡Felicidades! Dominican Republic on Your 167th Year of Independence

Today, all of Dominican Republic is celebrating and rejoicing its 167-year old independence from Spain.  Columbus arrived in 1492 making this the site of the first permanent European settlement in the Americas. The Spanish occupied Dominican Republic for over 300 years followed by a Haitian occupation and a small period of U.S. occupation.

The Dominican Republic declared independence following the Haitian occupation on February 27, 1844.  Over 70 years the country has endured outbreaks of civil war, political instability and economic chaos.  Today it enjoys a democratic government and is recognized as one of the world’s top tourist destinations.  There is a vibrant Dominican population in the U.S. that is celebrating with friends and family on this special day with ‘sancocho’ and other island favorites.

The U.S. government via Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sent their well wishes to the people of the Dominican Republic:

On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of the Dominican Republic as you celebrate the 167th anniversary of your independence this February 27.

Our countries have a strong foundation based on mutual interests and values. We are working through the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative to reduce illicit trafficking, advance regional security and promote justice. We are strengthening democracy, spreading opportunity and promoting prosperity throughout the Americas through our Pathways to Prosperity Initiative. And we are expanding opportunity and trade with the Central America-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement.

Our two countries share ties of friendship, family and culture. As you celebrate on this anniversary of your independence, know that the United States stands with you and sends best wishes to all Dominicans for a peaceful and prosperous year ahead.

Charo: Lady Gaga is ‘Madonna With Diarrhea’

On Frank DeCaro’s OutQ radio show on Sirius XM, the “Love Boat” star and singer accused the “Born This Way” songstress of being worse than a Madonna rip-off.

“I can tell you, to me, Lady Gaga is Madonna with diarrhea,” the 60-year-old Spanish musician, who has released seven albums since 1977, said.

Charo added, “I don’t like it when somebody copies somebody and just adopt it. Like, their own idea.”

Lady Gaga responded to the Madonna comparisons on Leno this week.

“I got an email from [Madonna’s] people and her sending me their love and complete support on behalf of the single,” she told the host, “and if the queen says it shall be, then it shall be.”

One Year After Chile’s Devastating 8.8 Magnitude Earthquake

On February 27, 2010 a 8.8 magnitude earthquake shook Chile leaving it in ruins:  524 dead, 800,0000 homeless, 370,000 houses ruined, 4,500 schools destroyed and $30 billion in damages.

The earthquake is considered the fifth largest in history and increased the country’s poverty rate by 3 percent.

One year later the rebuilding continues, with official government statements saying 50% of the rebuild is done whereby 940 miles of roads were repaired and 200 bridges rebuilt.  There are many complaints especially from the poorer sectors of the country that the rebuilding is taking too long.  Regardless of the time frame, the Chilean economy has emerged unscathed with its wood pulp and wine making industries back on their feet.  Its key industry cooper production is expected to grow 6% this year.

Nonetheless, Chile remains very weary of another earthquake, this past year alone the country had 20 quakes with a magnitude of 6 or higher and 4,000 temblors.  Just in this past week the country felt 5 earthquakes along its coast line.

And then of course their is the inspirational and incredible story of the 33 Chilean miners that riveted the world and served as a symbol of what Chile can do in a time of crisis.

‘White Men’ Only Education Scholarship Being Offered in Texas

Claiming to be non-political or racially motivated the Texas non-profit ‘Former Majority Association for Equality’ is offering white male’s only a $500 college scholarship.

Colby Bohannan created the organization after realizing there are few to no scholarship opportunities for white males.  In his college application process he found many resources for either women or minorities.  He was quick to point out that “I’m not sure white males are the majority anymore.” Possibly that mind-set is what motived Bohannan to identify the organization and scholarship as ‘former majority’.

Their stated goal is:

To financially assist young Americans seeking higher education who lack opportunities in similar organizations that are based upon race or gender. In a country that proclaims equality for all, we provide monetary aid to those that have found the scholarship application process difficult because they do not fit into certain categories or any ethnic group.

Applications are currently being accepted through June 1, 2011 for the fall college semester.  Applicants need to prove they are at least 25% Caucasian, have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and demonstrate financial need.  On July 4th (interesting choice of dates) five applicant winners will be announced.

Scott Bundgaard,(R) the Arizona state Senate majority leader, was involved in a domestic violence dispute this weekend with his girlfriend Aubry Ballard (34).

Phoenix police responded to a report on Friday night that Bundgaard was pulling Ballard out of a car stopped next to the median on State Route 51.

When officers arrived, they found Bundgaard and Ballard, and saw both had marks on their bodies showing they had been in a physical altercation, said Police Department spokesman Sgt. Tommy Thompson.

Bundgaard and Ballard were both detained, but Bundgaard told officers that under Arizona law he is immune from arrest while the legislature is in session, police said. Ballard was booked for domestic violence assault though.

Police found Bundgaard could correctly claim immunity, but the case was submitted to prosecutors for review.

Bundergaard released a statement on Saturday:
“I had no choice but to pull her from the driver’s seat, which resulted in marks on her knees,” Bundgaard said.
“I had also had no choice but to stop her from punching me and risking highway safety, all of which resulted in a black eye for me and a busted lip,” he said.
He added, “I waive any and all ‘legislative immunity.’ If I did something wrong, charge me. I did not.”

Hispanic Man Who Cranked Called 911 18,000 Times is Arrested in California

Maurice Cruz, 43, of East Los Angeles has been arrested for crank calling the city’s emergency dispatchers on 911 over 18,000 times.

The California Highway Patrol arrested Cruz with the help of the U.S. Secret Service, who was involved to make sure there was no viable national threat involved.

Actress Yvette Yates will dominate the screen in her upcoming role as the sexy dominatrix sorority girl Sloan, in the feature film Sorority Party Massacre, written by Chris W. Freeman.

The film also stars television actor Ed O’Ross, C. Thomas Howell (The Hitcher), Leslie Easterbrook (The Devil’s Rejects), Richard Moll (House), Ron Jeremy, Eve Mauro and Tom Downey.

In her role in the film, Yates plays one of five sorority sisters competing for the Fawnskin Grant, aptly named after one of the sister’s mother. Although Sloan (Yates) is sexy and sultry, she also is a dominatrix and fixes up cars. Winning the grant would give them the second highest post in the national conference of sisterhood. But while stationed at an isolated cove, the sorority girls find themselves being watched by a killer and when a body emerges from the lake, suspects literally crawl out of the hills. A big city detective and a small town sheriff discover that at least one girl has gone missing in this sleepy fishing town each year for the last twenty years.

But don’t let the good looks and sweet smiles of the sorority sisters fool you; they have their own nefarious plans in mind in this fun and freaky Freeman flick.

Sorority Party Massacre is directed by Chris W. Freeman and Justin Jones.

Sorority Party Massacre comes on the heels of Yates’ other recent film, Without Men, starring Eva Longoria and Christian Slater, which was picked up for theatrical distribution by Maya Entertainment and slated for a U.S. release in Summer 2011. Maya Releasing, who also picked up all foreign rights, locked up theatrical distribution deals during The Berlin Film Market in: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Greece, Latin America, Middle East, Poland, Portugal, Romania, South Africa and Switzerland. Negotiations are underway for theatrical deals in France, Germany, Italy, and Scandinavia.

Yates most recent credits include I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, Rockstars’ popular videogame Red Dead Redemption and award-winning Nina Quebrada. Yates will also star in Season Three of the award-wining web series YLSE.

American Named Top Airline for Diversity

For the third consecutive year, American Airlines is a recipient of the Diversity Council Honors Award from the Association of Diversity Councils, which recognizes companies for outstanding achievements in demonstrating workplace diversity. American was the sole airline to be listed as having one of the nation’s top 25 diversity councils.

“We are extremely proud to see this recognition of our Diversity Advisory Council and the tremendous leadership it provides – not only its support of our ongoing inclusion efforts, but also in addressing business challenges,” said Lauri Curtis, American’s Vice President of Diversity, Leadership and Engagement Strategies. “

Curtis noted that American strives to create an environment where each employee’s unique experience, perspectives and ideas are encouraged and valued. “At American Airlines, we are energized by our global and diverse workforce,” she added. “We are dedicated not only to advancing matters of equality and inclusion, but to supporting and celebrating them.”

The Diversity Council Honors Awards program distinguishes corporate diversity councils that lead diversity processes in organizations and demonstrate results in their workforce, workplace and marketplace. Winners’ rankings will be announced at an awards dinner and ceremony in Atlanta on April 5.

A Diversity Committee within the AMR Corporation Board of Directors provides oversight of American and American Eagle Airlines diversity initiatives. Company initiatives include fostering minority business growth and supplier diversity, as well as supporting employee involvement in a broad range of diversity-related programs and organizations.

In addition, the Council has provided cultural perspectives for updates to American’s uniform and appearance standards, and offered presentations to flight attendant groups regarding faith-based traditions.

American also has strong partnerships with national and local advocacy organizations that promote equality and advancement for under-represented groups.
