Spain’s global superstar, Alejandro Sanz, has signed an exclusive, long-term recording agreement with Universal Music Group, the world’s leading Music Company.

Alejandro Sanz is among the most popular, celebrated artists of the past decades, whose worldwide career encompasses multi-platinum record sales, concert tours seen by millions on three continents, and a cavalcade of awards – including the Latin Grammy for Album of the Year three times, more than any other artist.

“My new home is Universal,” said Sanz.  “I face up to this new phase in my life with all my might and I am confident that we’re going to make big things happen.”

Alejandro Sanz has achieved album sales of more than 20 million since his recording career began more than 20 years ago, including 1997’s “Mas,” which sold more than 5 million copies worldwide.  He has been recognized with dozens of accolades, including 16 Latin Grammys, 2 Grammys, and a World Music Award for biggest-selling Spanish artist worldwide.  Among the stars with whom Sanz has performed or recorded are Alicia Keys, Juanes, The Corrs, Shakira , Joaquin Sabina, Miguel Bose, Antonio Carmona, Alexandre Pires, Lena, Ivete Sangalo, Paolo Vallesi, Destiny’s Child, Daniela Mercury, Juan Luis Guerra, Malu, David Bisbal, Marc Anthony and Francisco Cespedes.  In 2001 he was the first Spanish artist to record an “Unplugged” album for MTV.

The new agreement was signed Feb. 11 in Miami, where Sanz was joined by Max Hole, Chief Operating Officer, Universal Music Group International; Jesus Lopez, Chairman/CEO, Universal Music Latin America & Iberian Peninsula; and Fabrice Benoit, President, Universal Music Iberian Peninsula.

Alejandro Sanz will soon begin recording his Universal Music debut album. It follows 2009’s multi-platinum “Paraiso Express,” which topped charts in Spain, Mexico and the U.S., including Billboard’s Top Latin Albums.

“After 20 memorable years of my career with my former label,” commented Alejandro Sanz, “our roads must come to an end.  It has been an honor to have shared with them my greatest memories and a career full of success.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

“I have made this decision fully convinced that we’re going to confront new challenges with the hope, dedication and competitiveness which characterizes the Universal Music team.  I have so many things to share:  the music, the passion.”

Jesus Lopez said, “Alejandro Sanz is artistically the utmost symbol of his generation.  Over the past 20 years, he has become the finest ambassador of Spain’s musical culture to the world, uniting fans of all ages and social types.  His influence in Hispanic culture is the model for many of his contemporaries, and for succeeding generations, too.

“All of us at Universal Music are extremely honored that Alejandro is becoming part of our family, and we feel a huge sense of pride and responsibility in collaborating to further expand his already astonishing career.”
Max Hole commented, “Alejandro is one of the true greats of Spanish music as singer, writer and performer.  In addition, he is to be admired for his social work and for speaking up for copyright.  We are looking forward to working with him and his manager, Rosa Lagarrigue, on the next phase of this remarkable career – and having hits together over the next 20 years!”

Fabrice Benoit said, “It’s an honor for the team at Universal Music Spain to be able to work with such a prestigious, complete artist as Alejandro Sanz.  Without doubt, he is No. 1.”

Alejandro Sanz concluded, “I want to give special thanks to Jesus Lopez.  He knows me, and he fought to bring me home.  Thank you for the enthusiasm and for the confidence.  Let’s move full speed ahead – let’s go for it all!”

A small group of Latino Utah residents are asking Mexico to suspend the visas for Mormon missionaries until the LDS Church takes a stand on immigration.

Raúl López-Vargas plans to deliver his petition to the Mexican Consulate of Salt Lake City on Monday. López-Vargas said he believes the LDS Church has the power to influence Utah lawmakers. “They have to say something about this problem,” he said.

“We have made our position clear on the Utah Compact and on the immigration issue,” said LDS Church spokesman Scott Trotter, referring to the church’s support for the document backed by a wide variety of community leaders. The compact calls for laws that “properly balance love for neighbors, family cohesion, and the observance of just and enforceable laws.”

Some argue that the missionaries are not involved and should not be used in the immigration battle.

South African Photographer Mike Mike, set out to find Miss Average in 41 different nationalities. In taking pictures of more than 100 women in each nationality and then laying them digitally on top of each other, common regional features began to emerge.

The 46-year-old got the idea for his project when he was studying at London’s Goldsmiths College.

He said: ‘Sitting on the underground train, I was intrigued by the sheer diversity of the place – Somalis, Indians, Americans, Zimbabweans, Scandinavians and a hundred other nationalities vying for their place in the metropolis.

‘I thought: “What is this place, what is a Londoner?”

‘I thought if one could merge all the people in a place like London one would be looking at the future of that place – one would have some notion of what a Londoner is or will become.’

And the project took shape….

Michelle Obama Urges Latinos to Put Pressure on Republicans to Support Immigration Reform

Michelle Obama Urges Latinos to Put Pressure on Republicans to Support Immigration Reform

In an interview with Univision, First Lady Michelle Obama said that President Obama wanted to pass immigration legislation but could not due to a lack of Republican support. Mrs. Obama calls on Latino’s to put pressure on Republicans to support immigration reform.

Referring to the Dream Act that’s latest attempt failed in December, that had little Republican support…

“So I urge the Latino community, he needs help, he’s got to have Republicans and Democrats in Congress who are going to step up,” the first lady said. “If a sound immigration bill gets put on the President’s desk he is going to sign it. But it’s got to get through Congress. He can’t do it alone,” said Mrs. Obama.

When asked if President Obama tried hard enough to pass the Dream Act..

“Immigration reform has been at the top of my husband’s agenda from the minute he thought about running for this office,” she said, adding later, “But people have to know that the President can’t pass immigration reform without the support of Congress and we don’t have that,” argued Michelle Obama.

6 dead, 37 injured in Shooting, Grenade Attack on Guadalajara Nightclub

A popular dance club turned deadly on Saturday morning.  Assailants drove up to the Butter Club in the Guadalajara restaurant district that was crowded with young people and sprayed it with bullets. Some of the men then threw a grenade into the nightclub entrance. The assailants then fled after the pre-dawn attack.

Six died and 37 were injured, and a Venezuelan and a Colombian were among the dead

In a press conference led by state Attorney General Tomas Coronado Olmos, authorities believe the attack may be the result of a fight between two groups earlier in the trendy disco. Police are studying surveillance video from inside the dance club to try to piece together what happened.

The U.S. Consulate in Guadalajara recently warned U.S. citizens not to drive at night in parts of the city after suspected drug-gang members burned vehicles and blocked streets.

Such alerts have become common for highways in some areas of northern and western Mexico, but not for Guadalajara, which is known more for its mariachi music and tequila than as a focal point of a drug war that has claimed nearly 35,000 lives since 2006.

Thousands of women are expected to take part in marches in cities across Italy to protest against the country’s prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi this weekend, as a call for consequences continues to grow.

The organizers say recent sex scandals implicating Mr. Berlusconi demean women.

“The idea is to march into squares in every part of Italy in a peaceful but noisy manner with pots, ladles, saucepans and lids,” the group said.

One rally being publicized on Facebook is calling for protesters to march to Berlusconi’s lavish villa and throw condoms at the gate. In 1993 former prime minister Craxi was pelted with coins when he was accused of corruptions, Condoms seem apropriate given Berlusconi’s sexcapades.

Another group plans to throw underwear outside the Prime Ministers villa, while yet another Facebook initiative urges Italians to hang banners from their balconies saying “Berlusconi go away”.

The prime minister denies allegations he paid an underage prostitute for sex.

The Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles Calls to Cut Off Federal Funding of Abortions

The Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles Calls to Cut Off Federal Funding of Abortions

The Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles, a leading voice for Latinos, today called on the House of Representatives to pass HR 3, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, sponsored by Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ), which creates a government-wide statutory prohibition on abortion funding.  The bill would ensure that no federal funds pay for abortion in the U.S., and also prohibits federal funds from being used to promote and perform abortions overseas as a form of family planning.

“It’s time for the federal government to stop aiding and abetting abortion practitioners who are targeting our communities to kill our children.  Twenty-two percent of abortions in the U.S. are performed on Hispanic women, and they are 2.7 times more likely to have an abortion than non-Hispanic white women,” said Alfonso Aguilar, Executive Director of the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles.  “Motivated by their warped eugenic views, Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers are clearly going after racial and ethnic minorities in the country.

“Latino voters need to be educated about the efforts of many in Congress and of the Obama Administration to continue allowing this inhumane attack on our community. Liberals have been able to hide this from Latinos for many years because they know the majority of Hispanics are pro-life.  We’re going to put a stop to that.

“It’s important to note also that one of President Obama’s first acts when taking office in 2009 was to rescind President Bush’s Executive Order that prohibited federal funding of organizations that promote abortion abroad. Now, taxpayer money can be used to fund groups that promote abortion as a family planning method, even in developing countries where abortion is illegal. If Latinos, of which 40 percent of them are foreign-born, were to find out that this Administration is helping to actively promote abortion in their home countries, including Mexico, they would be outraged.”

The Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles promotes conservative values and ideals within the Latino community and works to integrate Latinos into fuller and more active participation and leadership in the conservative movement. It is an initiative of The American Principles Project, a 501(c)(3) organization
