Salvadoran President Announces 3rd Migrant Survived Mexican Massacre

Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes announced yesterday that a third man survived August’s massacre of 72 migrants in a ranch in Tamaulipas, Mexico.  Mexico has confirmed that 77 migrants from Central and South American were kidnapped and held at the ranch either for ransom or to force them to work for drug cartels.  Authorities believe the violent Zetas drug cartel kidnapped the individuals as they were heading toward the U.S.

The Mexican government has not confirmed there were three survivors.  They have confirmed two survivors one from Honduras and the other from Ecuador.  They were forced to admit to the second survivor after Ecuador’s government made an official statement with the survivor’s identification.

President Funes made the unexpected announcement as he was receiving eleven bodies of Salvadorans killed at the massacre.  No further details on the person’s identification are known.

Economic Downturn Negatively Effecting Supplier Diversity & Minority Contracting Opportunities

An under-reported fact of the faltering economy has been the negative effect on contracting opportunities for minority-and women-owned businesses.  Corporations outsourcing and contracting protracted due to economic challenges and many minority firms felt the squeeze.

For example, Comerica Bank, that has been recognized by Hispanic Business as a top minority supplier, spent $15 million less on minority suppliers in 2009.  Ford Motor Co., which has one of the country’s largest supplier diversity budgets, saw its minority contracting dollars decline since 2007 to $3.3 billion dollars which reflects a $1 billion decrease.  It remains committed to setting aside 10.1% of is budget for minority contracts with the decrease a result of its own shrinking revenue.  Another major player in supplier diversity, PepsiCo spent $1 billion in 2009 on its minority contractors which remained flat from the year before.

Nonetheless, Comerica Bank, Ford and others are committed to setting aside percentages ranging from 5% to 25% of their budget to minority contracts and are committed to the practices of supplier diversity.  Nationwide, the amount corporate America spends on minority contracts has been steadily growing from $12.5 billion in 1988 to $100 billion in 2009

“The best way to build strong minority communities is to have strong minority businesses,” Harriet Michel, longtime president of the National Minority Supplier Development Council stated.  “The minority population is still growing in size and economic impact,” she added. “The economy can’t recover if large segments of the population are left out.”

24 year Old Colombian is Worlds Shortest Man

Edward Nino Hernandez has just been officially certified by Guinness World Records as the world’s shortest living man. Edward is 27 inches /70 centimeters tall.

Although his mother says he hasn’t grown since he was 2 years old, Edward is a typical 24 year old in many other ways. He loves to dance, want to see the worlds and would love to meet Jackie Chen.

Nino’s reign is not expected to last long as Khagendra Thapa Magar of Nepal is expected to take over after he turns 18 on Oct. 14. He measures about 22 inches and is currently recognized by Guinness as the shortest living teen.

From their apartment in Bogota, Edwards mother said the National University studied him for the first couple years of life then lost interest. The only health problem his mother is aware of is that he has cataracts in both eyes.

Spanish Terrorist Group Declares Cease Fire and an End to its Violence Campaign (VIDEO)

The Basque Homeland and Freedom group (ETA), released a video stating its intentions to lay downs its guns and cease its terrorists activities three years after it resumed its violent fight for independence from Spain.

The group, that has killed more than 800 people in its 50-year campaign for independence, is hoping to sit with Spanish government officials to discuss peace initiatives.  Europe and the U.S. as a terrorist organization recognize the group.  The last known terrorist act of ETA was in March in France where a police officer was killed.

The taped message was light on details as to whether this was a permanent cease-fire or whether it would turn over its weapons to officials.  Spain, who does not recognize the Basque’s region as independent, was called a “fascist offensive” for their treatment of Basque people.

Spanish government officials responded hours after the cease fire declaration ruling out any intention to negotiate; viewing the cease fire as a result of a weakened ETA since many of their key leaders have been arrested with over 700 ETA members in prison throughout Europe.

“We’re not going to take 10 or 12 or 14 million people and put them in jail or deport them.”

Republican Haley Barbour breaks from his party with his thoughts on immigration reform. With many Politicians on the right hopeful that raising illogical concerns over anchor babies or advocating for amending the constitution will help them in the upcoming elections, at least on Republican doesn’t think so.

In an interview, Governor Haley Barbour (R-MS) condemned those in his party who are working for policies that take advantage of immigrant labor but fail to bring the comprehensive reform the immigration system needs.

Barbour said that politicians need to seek out common sense solutions for the undocumented immigrants in the country “we’re not going to take 10 or 12 or 14 million people and put them in jail or deport them.” He continued, “Some people need to quit acting like we are and let’s talk about real solutions”;

BARBOUR: I’ve had a different experience then perhaps some other governors. I don’t know where we would have been in Mississippi after Katrina if it hadn’t been with the Spanish speakers that came in to help rebuild. And there’s no doubt in my mind some of them were here illegally. Some of them were, some of them weren’t. But they came in, they looked for the work. If they hadn’t been there — if they hadn’t come and stayed for a few months or a couple years — we would be way, way, way behind where we are now. [...]
My idea is everybody from Stanford who’s from India that gets a PhD, we ought to stamp citizenship on his diploma. So instead of him going back to India and starting a business that employs 1,800 people, then he’ll start a business that employs 1,800 people in Des Moines, Iowa, instead of India. A lot of it is just common sense. And common sense tell us we’re not going to take 10 or 12 or 14 million people and put them in jail and deport them. We’re not gonna do it, and we need to quit — some people need to quit acting like we are and let’s talk about real solutions.

Barbour is chairman of the Republican Governors Association Politico calls him “ the most powerful man in Republican politics”.
