Mexican Controlled Nacogdoches, Texas is Declared the Republic of Fredonia in 1826
Today in Latin American history, Benjamin W. Edwards rides into Mexican controlled Nacogdoches, Texas and declares himself ruler of the Republic of Fredonia in 1826.
On this day, the rebels rode into Nacogdoches and raised a flag of independence. Ultimately leading to the Fredonian Rebellion which lasted from December 22, 1826 – January 31, 1827.
Some historians consider the Fredonian Rebellion to be the beginning of the Texas Revolution.
