Undocumented Teen Forced to Work to Pay Off His Smuggling Fee

An undocumented Mexican teen was arrested for tending to marijuana crops in Ventura County, California. The juvenile was forced to work for illegal pot growers to pay off his debt to his smuggler. Authorities are concerned that young migrant forced labor could become a trend on marijuana plantations.

The 16-year-old Mexican teen was arrested July 27 at a pot field near the town of Fillmore. He informed authorities that two weeks prior to his arrest a smuggler helped him cross the border in Arizona, then took him to marijuana farm site and forced him to work. Authorities in Ventura County said this is the first case they’ve seen like this one.
