Denver Requires E-Verify Check for City Contractors

The city council of Denver has approved a measure Monday night that requires employers to check the immigration status of contractors working on city construction projects. The new legislations require companies to use the federal E-Verify program to verify if workers are in the country legally.

The on-line program checks information gathered by the employer against the records from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration.

The city already requires E-Verify for city service contracts. Opponents of the measure say it is not always accurate and could cause confusion for those who are here legally. Nevertheless, councilors added an appeals process to the measure before passing it.
