BORN ON AUGUST 24: Jorge Luis Borges

This seminal figure in Latin American literature was born on August 24, 1899 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He came to the world stage after winning the first Formentor Prize for outstanding literary achievement along with Samuel Beckett. The prolific writer, who wrote short-stories, essays, and poems that have been translated into 21 language, died on June 14, 1986.
