Today in 1974 the great Spanish actress and beauty Penelope Cruz was born in Alcobendas, Spain. This Taurus’ beauty was discovered early at the age of 15-years-old to model but her true passion was making films. Her first starring role was in “Jamon Jamon” in 1992 where she was featured alongside her future husband Spanish actor Javier Bardem.
Cruz star was rising when she met the man many describe as her mentor the great Spanish director Pedro Almodovar, starring in five of his films including the award winning “Volver”, a film she received her first Oscar nomination for Best Actress. The ambitious Taurus went on to find success in English-language films, that include “Vanilla Sky”, “Blow”, “Nine” and many others.
In 2009, Cruz won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the Woody Allen film “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” in which she starred alongside her husband.
The mother of two children is currently focused on her first America TV role in the upcoming FX network’s “American Crime Story” focused on the murder of fashion designer Gianni Versace where she will portray his sister Donatella Versace.
