Today in 1914 the former Venezuela president Marco Perez Jimenez was born in Tachira. While credited with bringing Venezuela into modern times with many public works projects Jimenez is also referred to as a dictator naming himself “Provisional President”.
As leader of Venezuela from 1953 to 1958 Venezuela experienced much prosperity and peace but those benefits were outweighed by the iron fist through which Jimenez ruled with. The stubborn Taurus wanted things his way only and demanded loyalty that was enforced through a secret police force.
Eventually the people of Venezuela sought a democratically elected president and forced Jimenez out through a coup. The dictator lived in exile for some time in the U.S. eventually settling in Spain.
