Today in 1933 Broadway great Chita Rivera was born in Washington, D.C as Dolores Conchita Figueroa del Rivero. This triple threat is the first Latina and first Latino American to be honored with a Kennedy Center Award. President Obama also recognized her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Rivera has been nominated for 10 Tony’s and the winner of two for Best Leading Actress for The Rink and Kiss of the Spider Woman.

Rivera was part of the original cast of West Side Story on Broadway playing the role of Anita in 1957. The role made her famous and she made the role of Anita iconic. Shortly after her role as Anita she starred in Bye Bye Birdie, a play she received her first Tony nomination for. This Puerto Rican talent was formally trained at the George Balanchine School of American Ballet and started with dancing roles before her acting and singing talents were discovered.
