Today in 1911 Antonio Guzman Fernandez, the former president of the Dominican Republic was born in La Vega. Guzman is remembered as having stabilized the country after years of military intervention and strife. He was the first elected president to not seek reelection after accomplishing much of what he promised to do and recognized internationally for having demilitarized the Dominican government.
Guzman found great success as a cattle rancher and then became involved in politics. He served his country as Agriculture Secretary then became a vice presidential and presidential candidate. He is credited with helping the country become “self-sufficient in rice and beans for the first time in its history” and keeping campaign many campaign promises including building rural schools and roads.
Guzman served as president from 1978 to 1982 and allegedly committed suicide in the National Palace before his successor was inaugurated. His supporters say he died from an accidental shooting.
