Outstanding Latino Youth Sought for LULAC Leadership Seminars
The LULAC National Educational Service Centers invites you to help us identify outstanding Latino youth for the 2011 Washington Youth Leadership Seminar (WLYS). The seminar will be held from September 28, 2011 to October 2, 2011 in Washington, DC.
The Washington Youth Leadership Seminar offers a truly unique opportunity for students to voice their opinions directly to national leaders and policymakers. It challenges participating youth to focus on their own leadership development and encourages participants to apply these lessons back in their home communities. Participants are recommended by LULAC Councils to serve as representatives of their home states. Once in Washington D.C., students work with LNESC staff and LULAC leaders from across the country to develop a platform of initiatives which are of particular interest to Hispanic youth. After meeting with key policymakers in the field and discussing with think tank representatives, participants collaborate on a position piece, which is then sent to their congressional representatives. In past years, students have focused on issues as varied as gun control, education, immigration, healthcare reform and the economy.
Provisions
- The Washington Youth Leadership Seminar is completely free of charge to the selected students.
- The local LULAC Council is required to provide their selected student with full roundtrip airfare.
- LNESC provides participants with hotel accommodations, group meals, transportation in DC, program materials, and a $100 stipend for incidentals.
- LULAC provides participants with leadership training.
The application deadline is August 22, 2011. Students will be notified by LNESC on August 29th and all flight information must be sent to LNESC by September 9th. We ask each council not to book flights until they have received a letter of acceptance from LNESC on August 29th. LNESC will accept 50 students for this year’s Washington Youth Leadership Seminar. We look forward to receiving great applicants from your community!
