Now in the top three on Fox’s hit singing competition show, Jessica Sanchez was every bit and “American Idol” on Saturday as she performed on the flight deck of the USS Midway Museum in her home town of Chula Vista/San Diego as well as at her former high school.
Prior to singing four songs for the 4,000 fans in aboard the aircraft carrier, 16-year-old Sanchez sang in front of the nearly 6,000 fans who had gathered to cheer her on at Eastlake High School’s Stan Canaris Football Stadium. Eastlake in the school she attended before leaving to pursue music. She is currently homeschooled.
Her final song at the high school was “Proud Mary,” while her final at the aircraft carrier was Luther Vandross’ “Dance With My Father” which she also sang on Idol. The teen’s father is a U.S. Navy Reserve member about to be sent to Singapore. He joined her on stage and she dedicated the performance to him.
Chula Vista Mayor Cheryl Cox, who had asked the community to join her in supporting and voting for the hometown hero, proclaimed May 12 as “Jessica Sanchez Day” with the help of the Eastlake High School marching band.
Both events were filmed by American Idol crew, with segments being used on Wednesday night’s show.
Not only has Sanchez received support from her fans in the U.S., she is also being cheered on by Philippine Vice-President Jejomar Binay, who has called on all Filipino to support her.
The little powerhouse is of Mexican and Filipino decent.
