On Wednesday night’s “American Idol”, Jessica Sanchez and fellow contestants chose songs MTV called “obscure” or “the most obvious choices possible.”
Now down to the final four, it’s sometimes easy to forget that Jessica Sanchez, with her powerhouse voice and professional stage presence is just 16 years old.
On last night’s show, Sanchez sang Etta James’ “Steal Away” and the Jennifer Holiday’s “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” The latter may have been a message to her fellow contestants that she’s not going anywhere, and they better watch. However, with that song being so impressively covered by “Idol” alum Jennifer Hudson, it was perhaps a bad choice. It may have been a mistake to present such an easy comparison to one of the strongest voices to ever come out of a Idol contestant. That being said, the little Latina was far from unimpressive. Sanchez clearly has the voice to build a career. The judges even gave her a standing ovation.
But has she picked up enough voting fans to make her the next American Idol? And if she’s sent home without the top prize, will she follow in J.Hud’s footsteps and show everyone that a being named an “Idol” doesn’t stop you from being an idol.
Check out Sanchez’s performance of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” from Wednesday night’s show.
