A 20-year-old player with Argentina’s Banfield soccer club died over the weekend when he got caught in the crossfire between a police officer and thieves outside Buenos Aires, the player’s agent said.

Lautaro Bugatto, who was on loan to the Tristan Suarez club, died on Sunday.

Police officer Damian Benitez was arrested as part of the investigation into the shooting.

Bugatto was preparing to return to playing for Banfield in the middle of the year, Banfield president Carlos Portell said.

The player was leaving his house in Burzaco with three friends early Sunday when he was shot.

“They took him to the clinic, but he died because the shot perforated his lung and he lost a lot of blood,” Bugatto’s agent, Adrian Romero, told a television station.

“This all happened because they tried to steal the scooter belonging to the police officer’s daughter on the corner by Lautaro’s house. Apparently, he (the officer) shot it out with them and a stray bullet hit him (Bugatto),” Romero said.
