In 1930 the first FIFA World Cup took place in Uruguay since the country was celebrating the centenary of its first constitution and the team had just won the ’28 Summer Olympics. It played against Argentina defeating them 4-2, but it was a bitter rivalry with the two teams not even being able to agree on which ball to use so they ended up using one from each country.
Now both countries are joining forces and making a historic bid to co-host the World Cup in 2030 which would be the 100th Anniversary of the championship. Nonetheless, the countries moved forward with their bid by forming a bilateral commission that will include Argentine President Cristina Fernandez and Uruguay President Jose Mujica.
