At least 10 gunmen and two soldiers were killed in a shootout in the western Mexican town of Guasave, officials in Sinaloa state said.

In remarks to reporters, state Attorney General Marco Antonio Higuera Gomez confirmed the number slain in Wednesday morning’s gun battle involving soldiers and members of two rival drug cartels active in Sinaloa.

Military sources said two other soldiers were in serious condition following the clash.
