After disappearing three weeks ago, Peruvian police officer Luis Astuquillca Vasquez has been found alive.
With bullet wounds in his legs and arm, Officer Astuquillca Vasquez managed to make his way to the town of Postaquiato. He reportedly went missing on April 12 when police were involved in a skirmish with members of the Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso), a guerrilla insurgent organization.
Astuquillca Vasquez said another officer, Cesar Vilca, was severely injured as well but was alive in at a location about 14 kilometers from Kiteni, where the clash with Shining Path had occurred.
The confrontation with the insurgents was part of an attempt to rescue 36 kidnapped contractors. The hostages were released three days later.
By the end of the fight, three officers went missing (Vilca and Astuquillca Vasquez included), 10 were injured, and three were killed in the skirmish that involved both armed forces and national police.
Additionally, three members of Peru’s security forces were killed and two others were wounded on April 28 while searching for Astuquillca Vasquez and Vilca.
