Jordan Ramos (21), a University of Iowa student, said she was discriminated against because of her weight in Union Bar in Iowa City, Iowa during an outing with some friends.

Self described as a “plus sized”, Ramos said that the bouncers stopped her when she tried to get onto a platform to dance with several of her friends.

The bouncer claimed that it was at capacity, so Ramos waited till a few other girls stepped off the platform.
Again, the bouncer stopped Ramos when she approached. Ramos then asked, “What is the difference between the other girls up there and myself?”

Ramos then proceeded to talk to the manager who refused to talk to her about the incident. After discussion with a social worker at the university, Ramos returned to the bar where she was again denied access to the platform.

The bar’s bouncer allegedly stated that Ramos was “obviously pregnant” and “not pretty enough” to dance on the platform. Ramos approached the Human Rights Commission in Iowa City, which denied her request because size discrimination is not illegal by law.
