Stories of teens having children are sadly fairly common, but an even more startling realization is that preteens are having children as well.

A member of the Wayuu tribe, the indigenous group of the La Guajira Peninsula in the northern region of Colombia and Venezuela, has given birth to a baby girl at the age of just 11 years old.

The unnamed girl is said to be doing well after giving birth at a hospital and the newborn is also doing well.

While many are shocked to hear of the child giving birth, it appears such a thing is relatively common in the Wayuu society, and since the Wayuu have autonomy, they maintain their own sovereignty and have their own set of laws.

The baby’s father was not identified either and it is not believed the Wayuu people will be talking about it.

Univision’s Primer Impacto also did a report on the birth. Watch the video here.
