Being a teen mom with a sick child is hard enough, but when you arrive at a hospital you hope things will get better not. For young mother Veronica Olguin, however, that was not the case.

On October, Veronica, 15, took her then three-month-old daughter Selena to the hospital because she was running a fever. The infant was admitted to Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center and after three days in the hospital she had improved and was in the process of being discharged when a nurse came to remove the baby’s IV.

While cutting off the tape that held the IV against Selena’s arm, the nurse was not paying attention and actually cut off the end of the little girl’s pinky.

With a bleeding and screaming baby in her arms, Veronica was terrified to see her baby girl bleeding everywhere as she cried.

The nurse, realizing her mistake, threw the scissors in the waste basket and ran out of the room. Doctors entered the room shortly after and found the end of Selena’s finger. Due to the small veins however, the finger piece could not be reattached.

Olguin’s attorney says he was communicating with the hospital for awhile, but that all communication was halted on their end, at which point a lawsuit was filed. Veronica is suing the Tampa hospital for negligence.

Today, 8-month-old Selena seems to be doing well, but Veronica says she cannot forget that moment, telling Florida’s WFLA, “I saw everything… And I can’t imagine what she went through. It’s really hard that she, she was born so perfect. And they just, they just cut off her finger.”
