An 18-month-old boy was left on the body of his father after hired killers gunned the man down Monday in the eastern town of Rio Grande, the Puerto Rico Police Deparment said.

Authorities were working to identify the assailants who shot Jose Gaztambide, 23, while he was sitting in his car in front of the home of his friend Dan Joel Robledo Figueroa in the Rio Grande neighborhood of Malpica.

The PRPD said that the gunmen opened fire when Gaztambide and Robledo were chatting and hit them both.

After the shooting, the killers noticed the presence of the toddler who was strapped in his car seat, so they took his father out of the car and left his son on top of him until police arrived.
