Republican Presidential Rick Santorum is in Puerto Rico ahead of Sunday’s primary and obviously forgot the territory’s official languages are BOTH English and Spanish.
When addressing the issue of statehood that many Puerto Rican want, he basically told them if you speak Spanish then no statehood, urging them to make English their official language.
He was adamant, according to Vocero, that any state wanting to join the Union had to not only have English be the official language it had to be the ‘primary’ language.
Various polls and census reports show that most Puerto Ricans speak Spanish, therefore they are probably saying to Santorum ‘Adios 20 delegate votos’.
Constitutional experts are also weighing in on the issue since Santorum’s position is at odds with the U.S. Constitution that does not have a language requirement for statehood.
In November Puerto Ricans will vote on a referendum as to whether the territory should pursue statehood.
