Here are factors you can control

Some risk factors for osteoporosis you can’t control—such as your age, heritage and family history of the brittle bones condition.

But the womenshealth.gov website says there are risk factors than you can control, including:

  Getting plenty of calcium in your diet each day.
  Getting plenty of daily vitamin D.
  Eating a healthy, balanced and nutrient-rich diet.
  Getting plenty of weight-bearing exercise.
  Avoiding smoking and drinking alcohol in moderation.
