On Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard caught what is being called a “narco submarine” off the coast of Honduras. The semi-submersible craft was attempting to smuggle a large amount of cocaine into the U.S.

When the semi-sub’s crew realized the Coast Guard were approaching they could be seen jumping from the craft after attempting to sink it.

Cmdr. Charles Fosse, commander of the Coast Guard cutter Seneca, said, “It was immediately obvious to our boarding crew that the SPSS [self-propelled semi submersible vessel] was taking on water and was being scuttled by its crew.” He added that they were able to grab two packages just seconds before the SPSS sank.

The Coast Guard said that though the vessel did sink, a FBI dive team was able to grab nearly 7.5 tons of cocaine worth roughly $180 million.

They say this was the first time a craft like this has been seen in the Western Caribbean, as they are primarily used to smuggle drugs in the Eastern Pacific.

This deserves a thumbs up! A job well done for the US Coast Guard. A “narco sub,” a homemade submarine of sorts utilized by drug smugglers. It is the 1st of its kind discovered by the Coast Guard in the Atlantic. These vessels are being found constantly, though they used to be only rumors. Individuals are simply trying to make installment loans from them.
