Southern California resident Juan Jose Redin joined First Lady Michelle Obama as husband Barack gave his State of the Union Address, Tuesday.

Redin, the North Hollywood attorney, was invited after showing his relentless support for the California version of the DREAM Act, which he says allowed him to attend college, which financially, would have been out of reach otherwise. At the age of 10, Redin was brought the U.S. from Mexico, and he says California’s Assembly Bill 540 allowed him to attend UCLA, where he earned his undergraduate and law degrees.

A White House spokesman released a statement saying, “The guests of the First Lady each have uniquely American stories to tell, and in many cases their stories highlight not only the challenges we’ve overcome, but some of the ways in which we can move forward together as a nation and create an America built to last.”
