Around 10.7 million Mexicans are expected to travel within the country between now and Jan. 3, an increase of 4 percent over the 2010 Christmas-New Year’s holiday, the Tourism Department said Friday.
Beach destinations will be the most popular, and hotels at seaside resorts will reach occupancy rates above 80 percent, the department said.
The department estimates that tourists will spend some 40 billion pesos ($2.88 billion) during this holiday season.
For travelers who need help on Mexico’s 262 highways, the tourism and transportation departments launched Friday the so-called Winter Operation of the Green Angels, a federal body that provides mechanical assistance.
Taking part in the program are more than 700 personnel concentrated in 75 camps along the nation’s expressways.
“The Green Angels Corps will maintain close coordination with the emergency management services of the Red Cross and Federal Police as well as with Federal Roads and Bridges,” the note from the Tourism Department said.
