Steve Abraira, has been named the Boston Fire Departments first Hispanic fire chief. He is of Cuban, Spanish, and Italian heritage.
At the age of 19, Abraira followed his father into a fire rescue career, and has since worked his way up the ladder during his 37-year career.
Abraira came to Boston by way of Miami and also Dallas, from which he expressed being forcibly removed from the department.
The 56-year-old said he and the new city manager in Dallas “didn’t see eye-to-eye” and that “she wanted to make a change” so he retired.
Chief Abraira served the Miami, Florida Fire-Rescue Department for over 26 years, retiring as an Assistant Fire Chief in 2000 when he was appointed Fire Chief of the City of Dallas, Texas Fire-Rescue Department. Chief Abraira served the City of Dallas for over 5 years before retiring and returning to Florida. In 2007, Abraira came out of retirement to assume his current position of Fire Chief in Palm Bay, Florida.
