A Chicago man in jail after he reportedly scalded his toddler son with after getting angry that the boy’s diaper was dirty.

After his 23-month-old son’s diaper fell apart because it was too full, police say Marco Santos, 39, on the McKinley Park neighborhood, became so angry that he placed a frying pan filled with hot oil on the boy, causing second and third degree burns on the child’s genitals and thigh. He then placed toothpaste on the wounds.

ImageThe mother, Joanna Pawlina, 36, was also arrested for failing to take the child to the hospital until three days after the incident, when they noticed the toddler was having trouble walking.

Santos has been charged with aggravated battery to a child, and a Cook County judge ordered him held in lieu of $500,000 bail. Pawlina has been charged with one count of endangering the life and health of a child, which is a misdemeanor.

The child was injured so badly that the burns will require skin grafts.
