The freelance terrorist Illich Ramirez Sanchez, better known as ‘Carlos the Jackal’ will finally come to trial for 11 murders he allegedly committed almost three decades ago in France.
Prior to being arrested in France in 1994, Sanchez has been tied to countless acts of terrorism from kidnapping OPEC ministers to hijacking a French jetliner to Africa to the massacre of Israeli athletes at the ’72 Munich Olympics. He describes himself a ‘revolutionary for hire’.
At tomorrow’s trial Sanchez will hear the case against him for four deadly bombings in France that occurred from 1982-83 that killed 11 people and injured 140. He is currently serving 30-years mandatory on a life sentence in France for killing two French police and an informant in Paris.
Though vilified in movies, books and globally he is praised and admired by his home country of Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez, once praising him as a “revolutionary fighter”. That is where the Jackal hopes to live out the rest of his life and this trial will ultimately determine that.
