A California high school has taken a progressive step in its support of the LGBTQ community with the election of a lesbian couple as their homecoming king and queen.

At Patrick Henry High School in San Francisco, Saturday, Rebeca Arellano and Haileigh Adams were elected head of this year’s homecoming court.

The couple told reporters that they had not intended to run, but changed their minds after support flooded in, though that’s not to say they did not face “haters”.

Arellano is the first girl to be crowned king in the school’s history, and the couple was the first lesbian couple to hold the title.

They say they have received a number of friend requests on Facebook from people they do not know, but who have shared just how happy they are that the girls were both crowned.

Adams told ABC News, ‘We have a lot of support, but there are also a lot of people who are angry about it. Anonymous Patrick Henry students are saying they’re embarrassed and that it’s wrong for a girl to take the spot of king. But there’s no other way for us to run as a couple. It’s not really fair for us not to have the right to run as a couple.”’

The young couple have been together since their sophomore year, and say they only wanted to see the LGBTQ community given the same rights as everyone else.
