The Spain’s Guardia Civil is reporting the attempted smuggling of 625 kilos (almost 1,400 pounds) of cocaine in a freight container from Brazil. The ship was transporting coffee and had been chartered in the Dominican Republic but the report says that the drug was loaded on board during a stopover in Brazil.
This is the largest confiscation of drugs ever made at the port of Barcelona. The authorities arrested two port workers for their suspected role in the attempted smuggling.
The drug was hidden in 16 sports duffel bags camouflaged among bags of coffee beans. The ship had left the Dominican Republic in September and the coffee was being sent to a company in Madrid.
