The Bill Gates Foundation and Women’s World Banking (WWB), a non-profit microfinance organization that works globally to economically empower poor women and their families, are behind a new soap opera that will air on Channel 9 as of November 9.
The soap, Contracorriente (Against the Current), was filmed in Nicaragua. The starring role in the 16-episode series, Tatica, is played by Dominican actress Kalent Zaiz. The soap will air every Monday, with a repeat of the episode on Saturday. It tells the story of a lower-middle class family in Nicaragua and teaches how to invest money, how to make good use of available funds and how to save. Locally, it is supported by the Banco Adopem, which specializes in lending to women’s groups and micro-businesses led by women.
