Mexican President Felipe Calderon is now claiming that fugitive drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman possibly no longer in Mexico, giving gone north into the United States.
Earlier this week, the </em>New York Times</em> published comments from President Calderon, translated from a Spanish.
Calderon stated, “He is not in Mexican territory, and I suppose that Chapo is in American territory.”
His seemingly defensive comments came after being asked about El Chapo’s young wife giving birth in the U.S., where she is a legal resident, before reportedly heading back into Mexico.
He questioned why Emma Coronel, El Chapo’s 22-year-old wife, was not detained when she entered the U.S. However, officials say they had no charges pending against her, so she was not arrested.
U.S. authorities still believe El Chapo is hiding out in the mountainous terrain of western Mexico.
El Chapo Guzman is the head of the Sinaloa cartel, and has been a fugitive since escaping from prison in 2001. After the death of Osama bin Laden in May of 2011, he became number one on the FBI and Interpol’s “Most Wanted” list.
