The Utah Foster Care Foundation says it is looking for permanent homes for the thousands of children currently in the state’s foster care system, and have stated that they would like to see more Latino families bring the children into their homes.
There are currently more than 2,600 children in the state’s foster care system and that 26 percent of those children are Hispanic.
“It’s a high percentage. We do not have enough Latino foster families to meet all the needs of the children in the system,” Christina LeCluyse of the Utah Foster Care Foundation told a local </em>Fox News</em> affiliate.
LeCluyse said that parents need to be prepared to take in a foster child. After six months of preparation, the foster parents are faced with the sometimes difficult task of fostering children that have been abused or neglected.
Not all children that go into foster homes are up for adoption, however. Many just need temporary care and may return to their biological families, so taking culture into account is important.
The UFCF says they are looking for more Latino families in order to place the children with culturally appropriate homes.
