JUST IN: Guatemala Hit by 4.8 Magnitude Earthquake, Followed by 5.8 After Shock

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit close to Guatemala City, Guatemala a couple of hours ago.  The epicenter was 25 miles southeast of the capital city and 685 miles south east of Mexico City, Mexico.

The noon earthquake was quickly followed by another quake at 12:34 p.m. registering 5.8 in magnitude.  The earthquake appeared to be centered on land versus in the earth’s depths. 

A spokesperson for President Alvaro Colom reported “There are people buried in ruble.  Firefighters are on the scene in the department of Santa Rosa.  We have one confirmed dead.”
