A 14-year-old girl is being questioned by police and social workers to figure out why she ran through a playground stabbing other children at José de Choudens middle school.
Education Secretary Jesús Rivera Sánchez said that Tuesday, the girl ran from one kid to the next, stabbing and running, “like it was some sort of a joke.”
The frightened parents of the victims – aged 12 to 14 – were told to meet at a convention center to have their children tested for HIV and hepatitis C. As of Thursday, the Health Department was not sure if the syringe contained anything or it was contaminated in any way.
The needle-wielding girl has been suspended from school, but officials are still trying to determine why she did it.
Spokesperson for the Justice Department Fidel Rodriguez said the girl first told investigators that she found the syringe, but later admitted to stealing an unused needle from a hospital where she was visiting a relative. She said she originally snatched it to pierce her ears.
