Pope Benedict XVI has named Fabio Martinez Castilla to be the next archbishop of Tuxtla Gutierrez, Mexico, the Vatican said Tuesday.
The 63-year-old Martinez Castilla had been serving as bishop of Ciudad Lazaro Cardenas.
Martinez Castilla was born on July 20, 1950, in Islas Mujeres, then part of the Archdiocese of Yucatan and now part of the Prelature of Cancun-Chetumal.
He studied at the seminary in Yucatan state and was ordained in 1977.
Martinez Castilla has held numerous posts in the church and served as a missionary in Uije, Angola, from 1986 to 1994.
He was named bishop of Ciudad Lazaro Cardenas on March 13, 2007, and is in charge of missionary work for the Mexican Bishops Conference.
Martinez Castilla is a member of the Mexican Bishops Conference’s permanent council.
