It may come as a surprise to those visiting Costa Rica that whether you are in a small town or large city, Chinese food is almost never too far away, thanks in large part to the Chinese living in the country.

In fact, this week, both Chinese and Costa Rican chefs worked together to break the Guinness World Record for largest fried rice ir.

In San Jose, the chefs made enough friend rice to feed about 7,000 people in celebration of the Chinese New Year and the Year of the Snake.

Officially weighing in at 837 kgs (1,845 pounds), the massive batch of fried rice took 52 cooks to manage the enormous wok, which was made especially for this occasion.

In total, 725 kgs of rice, 200 kg of chicken, 120 kgs of ham, 20 kgs of Chinese sausage, hundreds of eggs, and an immeasurable amount of vegetables were used to create the meal.

The idea for the record-breaker came from the Chinese Association of Costa Rica.

One notable Costa Rican-American of Chinese decent is Glee’s Harry Shum, Jr, who plays Mike Chang, also called “Other Asian” by character Sue Sylvester. Shum and his two older sisters were born in Puerto Limón, Costa Rica.
