As a young man in Brazil left a friend’s engagement party he spotted something rather odd and perhaps frightening. It appeared to be raining spiders.

In the southern Brazilian town of Santo Antônio da Platina, web designer Erick Reis, 20, said he was leaving the party on Sunday when he realized it was not rain or even snow falling from the sky, but spiders.

According to a local biologist who spoke with Brazil’s G1, the spiders, Anelosimus eximius, are a member of the so-called “social spider” species group. The arachnids are known for making “sheet webs,” and the biologist called their behavior, which was captured on video, “normal.”

It may be normal for them, but I’m sure many would rather stick to snow and rain.
