A suspected smuggler who tried to enter Ukraine from neighboring Poland was arrested by border guards when they found he was carrying five paintings and an etching supposedly signed by Spanish master Pablo Picasso, officials said Monday.
The unidentified 32-year-old Ukrainian man was arrested at the Yagodin border post in the western region of Volynsk when border guards searched his van.
The suspect declared four paintings on his customs form, but he told border guards that he forgot to list another painting and the Picasso work.
The art works were turned over to a group of experts, who will determine their authenticity, history and value, officials said.
The etching is of a type done by many well-known artists, including Picasso and French master Henri Matisse.
